Abstract

Across approximately ten millennia, human societies have repeatedly expanded cooperation, knowledge, production, and institutional capacity while also reproducing domination, extraction, preventable catastrophe, and breakdown. This interdisciplinary white paper asks why those failures recur across otherwise different cultures and eras. It synthesizes findings from history, archaeology, political science, economics, sociology, psychology, evolutionary theory, adult development, ecology, complexity science, disaster research, and technology governance. Its distinctive contribution is an integrative six-layer framework of 20 interacting causal elements rather than a claim to have discovered 20 previously unknown causes.

The framework identifies recurring interactions among mixed human motives; failures of reasoning and shared reality; concentrated power, unjust consequence distribution, leadership, and collective-action problems; institutional rigidity and scale mismatch; ecological and technological boundary conditions; and complexity, tight coupling, and polycrisis. It also distinguishes types of collapse, incorporates structural-demographic instability, tests alternative pathways and successful corrections, and uses a qualitative dialectical meta-systemic analysis and problem-solving (DMAP) audit adapted from Otto Laske’s 28 dialectical thought forms. The paper concludes that moral principles and technical knowledge become durable only when institutions and individuals align incentives with common well-being, connect power to consequences, preserve truthful correction, restrain domination and free-riding, protect ecological viability, and remain capable of lawful adaptation.

Executive Summary

For roughly ten millennia, human societies have repeatedly achieved extraordinary cooperation, creativity, knowledge, and material progress—and then repeatedly produced domination, institutional capture, slavery, war, preventable famine, persecution, ecological destruction, authoritarianism, economic breakdown, and collapse. The dependable recurrence of these outcomes across very different cultures suggests that the problem cannot be explained by a single religion, ideology, nation, economic system, technology, or kind of leader.

This paper defines the main causes of civilization-level dysfunctionality as humanity’s persistent, recurring, and substantially preventable failure to organize power, leadership, cooperation, knowledge, education, resources, technology, and institutions in ways that protect long-term common well-being, distribute rights and consequences fairly, preserve truthful corrective feedback, restrain exploitation and destructive competition, remain within ecological limits, and adapt before accumulated problems produce widespread suffering, injustice, coercion, conflict, breakdown, or collapse.

The paper’s central finding is that repeated civilizational failure is driven by a repeating causal system rather than a collection of unrelated mistakes. Human mixed motives and developmental limitations operate inside institutions that often reward extraction, conceal costs, concentrate power, select unsuitable leaders, corrupt information, suppress correction, and defer consequences. Injustice is both a result of that system and one of the principal mechanisms through which it reproduces itself.

Because these causes operate across many parts of the current polycrisis, addressing them could reduce several major global risks at once. The forthcoming companion paper will examine specific solutions, limits, tradeoffs, safeguards, and implementation requirements.

The recurring dysfunction and injustice pattern in one paragraph

Human cooperation creates surplus, organization, and power. When consequences are poorly captured, some actors can keep the benefits of collective arrangements while transferring their harms to less-powerful people, rival societies, future generations, or nature. Power then concentrates and captures the rules. Captured systems increase extraction, injustice, free-riding, misinformation, ecological overshoot, and resistance to reform. Legitimacy declines, so leaders rely more heavily on propaganda, coercion, and security systems. Complexity and maintenance costs rise while resilience and truthful feedback fall. Internal and external shocks then interact, producing reform, authoritarian transformation, fragmentation, conquest, or several different kinds of breakdown and collapse—after which communities may adapt, ruling systems may disappear, or many of the same causal arrangements may be rebuilt.

 

Here are the 20 interacting causal elements identified in this paper that cause repeating dysfunctionality and injustice over the last 10,000 years

    1. Failure of consequence capture and incentive alignment: decision-makers retain benefits while shifting costs and risks to others.
    2. Concentration of power, institutional capture, and extraction: accumulated power rewrites rules to protect and enrich those who hold it.
    3. Evolved mixed-motive human psychology and evolutionary mismatch: capacities adapted to small-group human life thousands of years ago now confront global, technological, delayed, and abstract risks.
    4. Systemic injustice, domination, exclusion, and unequal consequence distribution: rights, power, benefits, burdens, recognition, and accountability are distributed unfairly and persistently.
    5. Failure to select, develop, constrain, and replace high-functioning leaders: systems reward charisma, loyalty, wealth, aggression, or manipulation more reliably than competence, maturity, integrity, and stewardship.
    6. Coalitionalism, identity-based exclusion, and intergroup conflict: strong in-group cooperation can be converted into exclusion, persecution, and war.
    7. Free-riding, cheating, and failure to protect the commons: exploiters gain advantages over contributors and degrade the cooperative systems on which all depend.
    8. Failure to provide universal rational, scientific, systemic, and metacognitive education: citizens and leaders remain poorly prepared to evaluate evidence, uncertainty, manipulation, modern complex adaptive systems, and their own thinking.
    9. Information corruption and collapse of shared reality: secrecy, propaganda, disinformation, censorship, incentive filtering, and algorithmic distortion disable collective correction.
    10. Denial, motivated reasoning, blame avoidance, and refusal to learn from wrongdoing: threats to identity, status, income, or legitimacy block acknowledgment, repair, and learning.
    11. Short-termism, cognitive bias, and underdeveloped reflective agency: immediate rewards and simple narratives dominate delayed, distributed, and systemic consequences.
    12. Failure to organize cooperation at the appropriate local, state, national, and transnational scale: problems cross boundaries while authority, accountability, and resources remain trapped at mismatched levels.
    13. Ecological and resource overshoot: population, consumption, extraction, and pollution exceed regenerative and waste-absorption capacities.
    14. Rigid, identity-bound, and non-falsifiable belief systems in governance: religious or secular political claims become sacred, identity-bound, and resistant to evidence or revision.
    15. Institutional rigidity, path dependence, organizational defensiveness, and failure to adapt: institutions protect inherited rules, investments, identities, and power even after conditions change.
    16. Authoritarianism, coercion, and the security-overhead trap: declining legitimacy produces repression that further damages trust, truth, capacity, and legitimacy.
    17. Excessive complexity and diminishing returns: additional layers of control and problem-solving cost more while delivering less and increasing fragility.
    18. Globalization, tight coupling, dependency, and loss of resilience: optimized interdependence allows failures to travel rapidly while eliminating redundancy and local backup capacity.
    19. Technology—including AI—advancing faster than governance, ethics, and human development: human power grows faster than the wisdom, accountability, and institutions needed to govern it.
    20. Systemic coupling, polycrisis, neglect of low-probability, high-impact risks, and cascading failure: multiple stresses and crises interact, causing harms larger and less predictable than their separate effects.

The numbers are reference labels, not a scientific rank order. The 20 items occupy different causal levels and change in importance across societies, eras, and outcomes. If the framework were reorganized by immediate danger in 2026 rather than long-run explanatory function, ecological overshoot and climate disruption, nuclear weapons, advanced artificial intelligence, biological risks, authoritarian regression, and systemic polycrisis would receive especially prominent and immediate attention. (Section 3 below explains each of the 20 causal elements in detail.)

 

Does humanity keep repeating the same 20 causes of the recurring dysfunction and injustice of the last 10,000 years, or do we learn from those painful lessons and make new choices?

Why this paper on humanity's long-term repeating patterns of dysfunction and injustice matters to everyone seeking a better future

Humanity now combines ancient status competition, coalitionalism, denial, and short-term bias with civilization-scale technologies and tightly connected complex global systems. The same causal patterns that once damaged a city, kingdom, or region can now destabilize climate, food, finance, information, public health, nuclear security, and artificial-intelligence systems across the planet.

One especially consequential modern feedback connects extreme private wealth with concentrated artificial-intelligence infrastructure. Billionaire-scale capital and large corporations can finance or control models, computing systems, data, platforms, and political influence; AI can then magnify the economic, informational, surveillance, and rule-shaping power of those who control it. This does not mean that every billionaire, technology company, or AI system acts alike or causes harm. It identifies a structural risk when wealth, technical capability, and weak accountability reinforce one another.

The World Inequality Report 2026 documents extreme wealth concentration and unequal political influence; the Stanford AI Index 2026 documents concentrated frontier-model production and hardware dependencies; and a Federal Trade Commission staff report identifies potential restrictions on access to computing resources, switching costs, and information advantages in major cloud-provider–AI-developer partnerships. The feedback relationship stated here is an inference from those bodies of evidence, not a claim made identically by any one source.

The urgency to learn from the recurring mistakes of our past is not based on one forecast. It rests on converging evidence: climate impacts and risks increase with every increment of warming; Earth-system research finds multiple planetary boundaries and tipping points already transgressed; disaster risk increasingly propagates through financial and social systems; and new global democracy measurements report a sustained wave of autocratization. Recent polycrisis scholarship describes common stresses, domino effects, intersystem feedbacks, and tipping points as identifiable mechanisms rather than as a loose metaphor. The practical significance of the paper's framework is diagnostic. If repeated injustice and dysfunction are misidentified as isolated episodes caused only by uniquely evil people, foreign enemies, or obsolete beliefs, societies can remove one symptom while rebuilding the causal or systemic architecture that produced it. A more complete diagnosis reveals why moral insight and technical knowledge—although indispensable—have repeatedly failed to prevent recurrence.

By understanding the recurring causes of dysfunction and injustice, societies can test new solutions and improve earlier approaches that were promising but poorly implemented. Doing so could reduce the risks of widespread civilizational breakdown and global catastrophes, including nuclear war. Some extreme global risks could also threaten humanity's long-term survival.

1. Introduction and Background

The agricultural and urban transitions beginning roughly 10,000 years ago made new forms of large and durable cooperation possible. Food surpluses could support cities, occupational specialization, recordkeeping, armies, taxation, monumental construction, law, trade, and centralized administration. These developments produced real gains: accumulated knowledge, longer chains of cooperation, public works, medicine, science, literature, and institutions capable of coordinating millions of people.

These transitions did not automatically or inevitably create hereditary hierarchy. Archaeological evidence shows substantial variation, political experimentation, resistance, and movement between more and less hierarchical arrangements. Settled production, stored surplus, population concentration, and cities expanded the possibilities for both cooperation and domination. Particular political and cultural mechanisms—including debt, inheritance, genealogy, sacred authority, administrative control, blocked exit, and conversion of earned prestige into permanent rank—determined whether those possibilities hardened into durable inequality. The history that followed is therefore neither a simple story of progress nor decline, but one of expanding cooperative capacity repeatedly entangled with expanding capacity for domination and systemic harm (Graeber and Wengrow 2021; Flannery and Marcus 2012).

The phrase “10,000 years” is therefore a public-facing approximation, not a claim that fully developed states existed everywhere in 8000 BCE or that evidence is equally abundant across the entire period. Archaeologists date agriculture, sedentism, urbanization, and state formation differently by region. Large states appear later than the earliest farming communities. The phrase refers to the broad civilizational era in which settled production, stored surplus, population growth, hierarchy, and increasingly complex institutions transformed the scale of both cooperation and injustice.

Nor does “humanity” mean every society has been equally unjust or dysfunctional. Human communities have developed many successful institutions for reciprocity, commons governance, mutual aid, conflict resolution, and ecological stewardship. Historical records are also biased toward empires, wars, ruling elites, literate states, and surviving archives. The framework examines recurring civilization-level patterns; it does not erase cultural variation, resistance, reform, or human achievement.

System boundary and levels of analysis

The focal object in this paper is not a civilization imagined as one actor. It is a coupled social-ecological system: interacting households, communities, organizations, markets, states, empires, transnational networks, technologies, cultures, and ecosystems. “Civilization” is used as a public-facing term for these large, durable arrangements of cooperation, power, production, knowledge, and governance. The relevant boundary changes with the question being asked, and every boundary reveals some relationships while placing others outside view.

The analysis therefore distinguishes lower-level actors and organizations, focal institutions and societies, and higher-level regional, global, and biospheric constraints. Causation can move upward when repeated individual and organizational actions accumulate into institutions or planetary effects. It can move downward when law, markets, culture, infrastructure, or ecological conditions constrain the choices available to people and organizations. These levels are not independent containers; they partly create and transform one another.

A final boundary question is essential: dysfunctional for whom? An arrangement can function extremely well for a ruling coalition, monopoly, occupying power, or extractive organization while violating rights, degrading ecosystems, and imposing costs on workers, subordinated groups, outsiders, or future generations. In this paper, “dysfunctional” means dysfunctional relative to long-term common well-being, basic rights, justice, ecological viability, and the publicly stated purposes of an institution—even when the same arrangement efficiently serves actors extracting benefits from it.

Responsibility is therefore unequal. People have not possessed equal power, contributed equally to harm, received equal benefits, or borne equal consequences. Structural explanation does not erase individual agency or culpability; organizers of genocide, enslavers, corrupt officials, corporate decision-makers, bystanders, resisters, and people acting under coercion hold different degrees of power, knowledge, choice, and responsibility.

From events to causal systems

War, slavery, famine, genocide, corruption, dictatorship, and collapse are often presented as the causes of human dysfunction. In this paper, they are treated primarily as historical outcomes generated by combinations of deeper mechanisms. A war may be driven by concentrated power, elite incentives, identity conflict, false information, resource pressure, rigid ideology, poor leadership, and military technology. A famine may begin with drought yet become catastrophic because of extraction, war, censorship, unequal access, institutional rigidity, or deliberate policy.

This distinction matters because visible events are easier to condemn than the systems that make them recurrent. Ending one war does not remove the incentives for the next. Replacing one dictator does not necessarily change how leaders are selected, constrained, informed, or removed. Publishing true information does not guarantee that captured institutions will act on it. A causal analysis must therefore examine psychological tendencies, developmental capacities, information, leadership, incentives, power, institutional design, ecology, technology, scale, and system interaction together.

The role of injustice

Injustice is not treated as a decorative moral concern or a single isolated outcome. It is simultaneously:

  • an outcome of power concentration, prejudice, exploitation, and exclusion;
  • a causal mechanism that reproduces poverty, resentment, conflict, ill health, and distrust;
  • a legitimacy destroyer that makes voluntary cooperation more difficult;
  • a force multiplier that increases vulnerability to shocks;
  • a self-reinforcing system in which advantage creates power and power protects advantage; and
  • a failure of consequence capture, because those receiving benefits are separated from those bearing the harms.

Justice therefore serves as a test across all 20 causes: Who receives the benefits? Who bears the costs and risks? Who makes decisions? Whose interests and knowledge count? Who is protected by the rules? Who is held accountable? What burdens are transferred to outsiders, nature, or future generations?

2. Definition of the Problem

Master research definition

Humanity’s 10,000-year civilization-level of ongoing dysfunctionality is defined as the persistent, recurring, and substantially preventable failure of human societies to organize power, leadership, cooperation, knowledge, education, individuals, resources, technology, and institutions in ways that protect the long-term common well-being, distribute rights and consequences fairly, preserve truthful corrective feedback, restrain exploitation and destructive competition, remain within ecological limits, and adapt before accumulated problems produce widespread suffering, injustice, coercion, conflict, breakdown, or collapse.

A shorter public definition is:

Civilization-level dysfunctionality is humanity’s recurring failure to organize power and cooperation fairly, truthfully, sustainably, and adaptively—producing preventable cycles of domination, injustice, conflict, overshoot, and collapse.

What qualifies as civilization-level dysfunctionality?

A condition generally belongs within this framework when it is:

  1. Systemic: produced or perpetuated by institutions, cultures, markets, political arrangements, or other large-scale structures.
  2. Persistent or recurring: repeated across generations, regimes, or civilizations.
  3. Severely consequential: capable of causing widespread suffering, injustice, coercion, loss, instability, or ecological damage.
  4. Substantially preventable: not merely an unavoidable feature of mortality, scarcity, or nature.
  5. Self-reinforcing: able to reproduce the incentives, beliefs, hierarchies, or conditions that created it.
  6. Resistant to correction: suppressing evidence, accountability, learning, reform, or dissent.
  7. Consequence-transferring: imposing serious costs on less-powerful groups, outsiders, other societies, future generations, or ecological systems.

This definition does not classify every personal mistake, conflict, disease, natural disaster, or period of hardship as civilization-level dysfunction. A drought is not automatically social dysfunction. Exhausting water supplies, suppressing warnings, allocating losses according to political power, refusing to prepare, and repeating the same failures after earlier droughts would qualify.

Collapse is not one outcome

The word collapse can conceal more than it explains unless the object, scale, time period, and affected population are named. The disappearance of a dynasty, tax system, imperial center, or monumental building program is not automatically the disappearance of a people, culture, economy, or community. Some populations have experienced the fall of an extractive ruling order as liberation or reorganization; others have experienced state failure, famine, infrastructure loss, or ecological breakdown as catastrophe. Modern global interdependence also makes historical analogies dangerous: failure of food, energy, health, finance, communications, or climate-support systems could propagate far beyond the fall of a past regional empire. Comparative archaeology and recent collapse research therefore require a more exact question: collapse of what, for whom, at which scale, over what period, measured by which indicators, and with what effects? (McAnany and Yoffee 2010; Kemp 2025).

Ecological collapse An ecosystem crosses a threshold and loses structure, function, biodiversity, or regenerative capacity. Political recovery cannot substitute for destroyed life-support systems or irreversible losses.
Global civilizational or existential catastrophe Tightly connected global systems fail across regions, or human survival and long-term potential are permanently reduced. Historical regional recoveries do not establish that a global nuclear, biological, ecological, or technological catastrophe would be recoverable.

Magnitude of the problem

No responsible scholar can calculate a single precise total for the human cost of 10,000 years of civilizational dysfunction and injustice. Records are incomplete; categories overlap; demographic estimates vary; and the counterfactual question—how much harm was preventable—is difficult. A spectacular-looking cumulative death number would imply a precision the evidence does not possess.

The scale is nevertheless unmistakable. Recurrent causal systems have contributed to conquest, slavery, caste, colonial extraction, gender subordination, genocide, religious persecution, preventable famine, forced migration, corruption, economic depressions, political terror, state failure, and ecological collapse. Their effects include not only deaths but lost health, freedom, education, trust, opportunity, culture, family continuity, institutional capacity, and development across generations.

The present magnitude is qualitatively different because many risks are global, tightly coupled, highly complex, and potentially irreversible. The principal consequence pathways include:

  • Ecological pathway: climate disruption, biodiversity loss, soil and water degradation, pollution, and resource overshoot can intensify food insecurity, disease, migration, conflict, and state fragility.
  • Political pathway: inequality, corruption, misinformation, and declining legitimacy can increase polarization, repression, democratic breakdown, and violent conflict.
  • Economic pathway: debt, financial concentration, fragile supply chains, unequal losses, and tightly coupled markets can transmit shocks rapidly while public institutions absorb private failures.
  • Technological pathway: nuclear, biological, cyber, surveillance, and advanced AI capabilities can scale error, manipulation, warfare, and loss of control faster than governance develops.
  • Social pathway: deteriorating trust and shared reality reduce the cooperation needed to manage every other pathway.
  • Polycrisis pathway: stresses in one system trigger, amplify, or disable responses in others, producing often unpredictable cascading consequences that are larger than the sum of separate crises.

3. The 20 Interacting Causal Elements of Repeating Dysfunctionality and Injustice

The number order in the 20 causal elements section below is a stable reference label only. They are not a scientific ranking.  Each element can operate at individual, organizational, national, international, technological, and ecological scales, but the elements do not all occupy the same causal level. Their architecture and interactions matter more than their numerical positions. Below are the 20 causal elements explained in greater detail.

1. Failure of consequence capture and incentive alignment

Consequence capture exists when decision-makers experience an appropriate share of the beneficial and harmful consequences produced by their decisions. Civilizations repeatedly separate decision, benefit, harm, and accountability. Rulers can gain territory or prestige while soldiers and civilians bear casualties. Owners can retain profits while workers, communities, taxpayers, future generations, or nature absorb injury and pollution. Financial institutions can privatize gains while public authorities socialize losses.

This separation changes behavior. When an actor can keep benefits and externalize costs, destructive conduct becomes individually rational even when it is collectively ruinous. Competition can then select for the people and organizations most willing or able to exploit the arrangement. Better intentions alone are unstable because responsible actors may be outcompeted by free-riders or extractive rivals.

Consequence capture connects several established concepts: externalities, moral hazard, principal-agent failure, regulatory capture, rent-seeking, corruption, free-riding, and the tragedy of poorly governed commons. Evolutionary research on major cooperative transitions similarly emphasizes that higher-order cooperation becomes stable only when destructive competition within the larger unit is adequately constrained and contributors are not persistently disadvantaged.

This cause is placed first because it helps explain why known harms continue. Societies often possess the moral principles and technical information needed to recognize damage. The recurring failure lies in arrangements that reward the people producing the harm, protect them from its effects, or delay the costs until after they leave office, collect profits, die, or transfer responsibility.

Justice connection: failed consequence capture is injustice expressed as system architecture. It allows benefits, burdens, risks, voice, and accountability to follow power rather than fair contribution or responsibility.

Plain-language takeaway: When people can keep the benefits of a decision while others absorb its harms, the system rewards damage. Durable correction requires accountability to follow decision-making power.

2. Concentration of power, institutional capture, and extraction

Cooperation produces surplus; surplus produces resources that can be administered, defended, accumulated, or seized. Across history, control over land, food storage, law, taxation, armies, information, credit, religion, bureaucracy, and technology has allowed comparatively small groups to acquire disproportionate power.

Power concentration becomes institutional capture when powerful actors reshape rules, appointments, enforcement, information, or public resources to protect their position. Capture can produce oligarchy, plutocracy, hereditary privilege, monopoly, colonial rule, one-party systems, clerical domination, military dictatorship, and regulatory control by the industries being regulated.

Captured institutions may remain administratively capable, but their purpose changes. They become effective at preserving the ruling coalition and less effective at serving the wider society. Public revenue is redirected, accountability is weakened, loyalists displace competent critics, harms are concealed, and peaceful correction becomes more expensive or dangerous.

This pattern does not require a unified secret conspiracy. Individuals and organizations responding to similar incentives can create aligned extraction without central coordination. Nor does capture belong to only governments or corporations. Political parties, professions, unions, media systems, religious organizations, universities, charities, and revolutionary movements can all protect insiders at the expense of their stated mission.

Power also reproduces itself through inheritance, property rules, family systems, education, professional credentials, law, media ownership, debt, access to credit, campaign finance, and control over administrative appointments. Colonial and imperial arrangements can move labor, land, raw materials, taxes, and risk from a periphery toward a political or commercial center. These relationships outlast particular rulers because they become embedded in institutions and ordinary expectations. Comparative research on regulatory capture, elite influence, colonial institutions, and oligarchy documents important parts of this process (Dal Bó 2006; Gilens and Page 2014; Acemoglu, Johnson, and Robinson 2001).

Billionaire-scale wealth is a modern form of this ancient structural problem. At extreme levels, private wealth can purchase more than consumption: it can provide rule-shaping capacity through lobbying, political donations, media and platform ownership, prolonged litigation, expert and policy networks, philanthropy, research agendas, infrastructure, data, and privileged access to decision-makers. The World Inequality Report 2026 reports that fewer than 60,000 people—the wealthiest 0.001 percent—hold three times the wealth of the bottom half of humanity and documents how concentrated wealth intersects with taxation, political donations, and unequal influence. This is a structural risk, not a claim that every billionaire uses wealth identically, acts illegally, or opposes the common good. The relevant test is whether any person or organization possesses power great enough to shape public rules and consequences without proportionate transparency, accountability, and democratic correction.

Power has several forms that should not be collapsed into one measure. Michael Mann distinguishes ideological, economic, military, and political sources of power, each with some autonomy and each capable of combining with the others. He also distinguishes collective power—people increasing their capacity through cooperation—from distributive power—some actors exercising power over others. A society can therefore possess too little capacity to solve shared problems, too much unaccountable coercive power, or both at once. The paper’s concern is not to eliminate collective capacity but to prevent its conversion into uncorrectable domination (Mann 2013).

Comparative research also identifies material conditions that can make domination easier without making it inevitable: resources that can be located, counted, stored, taxed, or seized; concentrated control of superior weapons and organized force; administrative systems that allow rulers to identify, classify, monitor, tax, conscript, and control populations and production; and geographic, legal, economic, or social barriers that prevent people from leaving. James C. Scott emphasizes how grain production, taxation, population records, standardized measurements, land maps, and other administrative systems made early populations and their resources more visible—and therefore more controllable—to rulers.

Power is necessary for collective action, so the problem is not power itself. The civilizational danger arises when power is concentrated without equivalent transparency, countervailing institutions, consequence capture, lawful constraint, succession, and correction. Once capture is deep, the system often converts reform efforts into new opportunities for control.

Plain-language takeaway: Power is necessary, but concentrated power without strong correction systems tends to make institutions serve insiders rather than their public purposes.

3. Evolved mixed-motive psychology and evolutionary mismatch

Humans did not evolve from modern chimpanzees; humans and chimpanzees descended from shared ancestral populations. Human psychology nevertheless carries deep primate and mammalian inheritances, further shaped by distinctively human cultural evolution, language, shared intentionality, teaching, norm enforcement, and cumulative cooperation.

This inheritance is not simply “bad evolutionary baggage.” It includes competing capacities: empathy and cruelty, reciprocity and cheating, generosity and accumulation, care and domination, loyalty and betrayal, curiosity and dogmatism, long-term planning and immediate gratification, cooperation within groups and hostility toward outsiders.

Humanity’s exceptional cooperative abilities made civilization possible. The difficulty is that psychological mechanisms adapted to relatively small groups, face-to-face relationships, visible dangers, repeated interaction, and comparatively immediate consequences now operate in a world of billions of strangers, abstract probabilities, delayed feedback, anonymous markets, mass communication, global institutions, and highly complex, often ubiquitous civilization-scale technologies.

This evolutionary mismatch helps explain why people often respond more strongly to vivid anecdotes than statistical harm, discount distant generations, follow confident in-group leaders, defend status, seek simple villains, and fail to intuit dangerous exponential or nonlinear change. Human intuition was not selected to understand atmospheric chemistry, derivatives networks, nuclear deterrence, algorithmic persuasion, engineered pathogens, artificial intelligence, complex adaptive systems, or interacting planetary thresholds.

Evolutionary explanation must not become biological determinism. Culture, education, institutions, development, and individual reflection substantially influence behavior. Humans exhibit wide variation and can construct cultural norms that enlarge moral concern. In this project, progressive evolution means a conditional, local, reversible, statistical upper-envelope tendency toward greater complexity, agency, and cooperation in some open systems. Many systems stagnate, regress, collapse, or become extinct. It is never a destiny, universal law, or guarantee of moral progress.

The analytical implication is positive but demanding: any explanation of repeated dysfunction must also account for actual human motives and limitations rather than presuming perfectly rational, impartial, fully informed, long-term actors.

Plain-language takeaway: Humans have capacities for both cooperation and domination. Culture, education, development, and institutions strongly influence which tendencies are rewarded and scaled.

4. Systemic injustice, domination, exclusion, and unequal consequence distribution

Civilization-level injustice is the persistent and systematic unfair distribution of rights, power, protection, opportunity, social recognition, benefits, burdens, risks, and accountability—particularly when more-powerful groups retain the benefits of social arrangements while transferring their costs and harms to less-powerful people, other societies, future generations, or the natural systems on which everyone depends.

Systemic injustice includes distributive injustice (who gets resources and burdens), procedural injustice (who participates in decisions), legal injustice (who receives protection or punishment), political injustice (whose voice has power), recognition injustice (whose identity and humanity are respected), corrective injustice (whether harms are repaired), global injustice (cost transfers between societies), ecological injustice (unequal exposure to environmental harm), and intergenerational injustice (burdens transferred to people not yet able to consent).

Injustice is both consequence and cause. Power concentration produces unequal rules and extraction. Those arrangements then give advantaged groups additional wealth, education, security, political access, and narrative control, which they can use to preserve the arrangements. Disadvantaged groups experience reduced health, mobility, trust, and political capacity, making correction harder.

Historically specific systems must be named rather than dissolved into neutral abstractions. Patriarchy has organized gendered authority, reproductive control, inheritance, violence, property, and the devaluation of care work. Colonialism and imperialism have linked political domination to racialization, land seizure, forced labor, cultural suppression, and core-periphery extraction. Caste, slavery, class relations, creditor-debtor power, labor regimes, and unequal property systems have structured who can command, exit, bargain, inherit, and receive legal protection. Disability exclusion has often treated access, care, autonomy, and participation as optional rather than basic justice. These systems overlap; a person located at several subordinated positions may experience a pattern that cannot be understood by analyzing each category separately.

Relational research helps specify the mechanisms. Charles Tilly described durable inequality through exploitation, opportunity hoarding, emulation, and adaptation (Tilly 1998). Kimberlé Crenshaw showed how single-category frameworks can erase people subject to intersecting forms of discrimination (Crenshaw 1989). Iris Marion Young analyzed structural injustice as the cumulative product of social processes in which differently positioned actors participate without any one actor necessarily designing the entire outcome (Young 2011).

Perceived unfairness also damages legitimacy. People are less willing to cooperate with institutions they experience as biased, humiliating, predatory, or unaccountable. Elites may interpret declining cooperation as proof that stronger control is needed, intensifying the very injustice that undermined cooperation.

Not every inequality is necessarily unjust, and equality does not require identical outcomes. The central questions are whether differences arise through fair procedures, serve legitimate purposes, preserve basic rights and dignity, reflect contribution or need appropriately, allow mobility and correction, and prevent powerful actors from transferring avoidable harms to those with less voice.

Plain-language takeaway: An arrangement can work very well for its beneficiaries while remaining unjust and destructive for subordinated groups, outsiders, future generations, or ecosystems.

5. Failure to select, develop, constrain, and replace high-functioning leaders

Human societies repeatedly select people for leadership based on qualities poorly related—or sometimes inversely related—to wise governance. Political and organizational systems can reward charisma over competence, wealth over judgment, loyalty over truthfulness, aggression over cooperation, fundraising over stewardship, certainty over intellectual humility, and manipulation over service.

Leadership matters because leaders influence appointments, information channels, institutional norms, priorities, enforcement, conflict, and crisis response. A dysfunctional system can obstruct a good leader, but an incompetent, corrupt, developmentally immature, or reality-detached leader can suppress warnings, reward loyalists, intensify capture, provoke conflict, and convert correctable problems into catastrophe.

A high-functioning leader is best defined not by one credential, IQ score, psychological label, or personality type, but by whether demonstrated cognitive, developmental, emotional, ethical, and practical capacities match the complexity and power of the position. Relevant evidence includes domain competence, rational and systems thinking, reality-based judgment under pressure, emotional regulation, perspective-taking, integrity, a verified history of protecting common well-being, willingness to acknowledge mistakes, capacity to select competent advisers, and tolerance for evidence-based disagreement.

Cognitive ability matters in complex roles, but meta-analytic research finds only a modest overall relationship between intelligence and leadership. Intelligence without integrity can make manipulation more effective. Education is evidence of preparation, not proof of judgment. Psychiatric diagnosis alone is not a defensible measure of fitness; current behavior, reality testing, impulse control, judgment, and role-relevant functioning are the legitimate concerns.

Robert Kegan’s constructive-developmental theory adds an important but limited lens. Self-authoring capacity—commonly described as Order 4—supports the ability to evaluate group expectations against examined principles. Self-transforming capacities associated with Order 5 support work across conflicting systems and partial perspectives.  Developmental assessment is not an IQ, morality, or psychiatric test. A sophisticated meaning-maker can still behave unethically.

Kegan’s framework has not been validated as a universal political-leadership selection test. Developmental assessment can be culturally biased, gamed, overinterpreted, or weaponized to exclude opponents. It is used here as a promising interpretive lens and research proposition—not an established requirement for office.

Leadership is also distributed. Cabinets, civil services, courts, scientific advisers, local administrators, professional norms, followers, succession arrangements, and leadership teams determine whether individual judgment becomes public action. A technically capable leader serving a destructive coalition may intensify harm, while a modest leader supported by high-capacity institutions may govern effectively.

State and administrative capacity matter in their own right: some failures arise from weak data, staffing, logistics, fiscal systems, or implementation competence rather than capture or malicious intent. The “toxic triangle” literature similarly treats destructive outcomes as interactions among leaders, susceptible followers, and conducive environments (Padilla, Hogan, and Kaiser 2007).

Political order requires several capacities that can develop unevenly. Following Francis Fukuyama, this paper distinguishes state capacity (the practical ability to make and carry out decisions), rule of law (public power constrained by general and enforceable rules), and political accountability (rulers answerable to citizens and institutions). It also distinguishes impersonal administration from systems governed through family, patronage, clientelism, or personal loyalty. Strong state capacity without law or accountability can make repression more effective; accountability without administrative capacity can produce promises that no institution can deliver. High-functioning leadership requires both capable public institutions and constraints on how their capacity is used.

Finally, good selection cannot substitute for constraint. Even capable and ethical leaders remain human, face incentives, possess incomplete knowledge, and can change under power. Leadership failure therefore includes inadequate monitoring, opaque conflicts of interest, weak succession, suppression of dissent, and inability to remove a leader lawfully. This is not a “great leader” theory of history; it is the conclusion that institutional quality and leader quality interact, and they are important for our future.

Plain-language takeaway: Good governance depends on capable and ethical leaders, competent teams and public institutions, truthful advisers, effective leader constraints, and lawful replacement—not on one supposedly exceptional person.

6. Coalitionalism, identity-based exclusion, and intergroup conflict

Humans readily form social identities. Even minimal and arbitrary group assignments can generate in-group favoritism. In real societies, ethnicity, religion, nationality, race, class, caste, party, ideology, language, and region provide much stronger identities supported by history, institutions, memory, and material interests.

Group identity enables loyalty, courage, mutual aid, and large-scale cooperation. The danger emerges when belonging requires hostility, inferiority, or moral exclusion of outsiders. Identity fusion can make criticism of the group feel like an attack on the self. Perceived threat, humiliation, inequality, propaganda, competition, and fear can then transform ordinary differences into existential conflict.

Destructive coalitionalism has contributed to conquest, racism, caste, persecution, ethnic cleansing, genocide, hyper-partisanship, and suppression of internal dissent. The older shorthand “tribalism” is avoided in the heading because it can stigmatize actual tribal and Indigenous societies and falsely imply that modern exclusion is a primitive remnant rather than behavior produced within contemporary institutions. The mechanism is especially dangerous when leaders manufacture enemies to unite supporters, excuse policy failure, redirect resentment, or justify exceptional powers.

Dehumanization can be an important escalation mechanism. Once an out-group is described as vermin, disease, contamination, criminals, traitors, or an existential infection, ordinary restraints against cruelty may weaken. Mass violence can also occur through obedience, conformity, fear, moralization, opportunism, professional role performance, and bureaucratic routines without every perpetrator literally denying victims’ humanity. Research on intergroup threat, social identity, propaganda, and participation therefore cautions against a single psychological explanation (Riek, Mania, and Gaertner 2006; Yanagizawa-Drott 2014).

Coalitionalism rarely acts alone. It becomes catastrophic when combined with concentrated power, information control, sacred ideology, poor leadership, resource stress, impunity, and technologies capable of organizing or automating violence. Interstate security dilemmas, arms races, alliance commitments, and fear of another group’s future power can also make mutually defensive actions cumulatively dangerous.

Warfare and intersocietal competition may also have had a historical double effect. Cultural-multilevel-selection research associated with Peter Turchin proposes that intense competition among societies helped select institutions capable of coordinating larger populations. The same processes could enlarge taxation, hierarchy, military discipline, forced labor, imperial extraction, and hostility toward outsiders. In this contested account, competition can increase cooperation within a group while increasing domination within it and violence between groups. The proposition does not mean war was necessary, desirable, or the sole path to large-scale cooperation; it identifies one mechanism through which cooperation and oppression may have expanded together.

Plain-language takeaway: Group identity can support belonging and cooperation, but it becomes dangerous when fear, propaganda, power, and incentives make exclusion or attack politically useful.

7. Free-riding, cheating, and failure to protect the commons

A common-pool resource is difficult to exclude people from using and is depleted by use; fisheries, forests, and many aquifers are standard examples. Public goods such as climate stability, scientific knowledge, trustworthy government, and democratic procedures present related but not technically identical collective-action problems. This paper uses “commons governance” broadly only when the distinction is made clear.

Free-riding occurs when actors accept the benefits of cooperation while avoiding a fair share of its costs. Cheating becomes systemically destructive when exploiters receive a durable advantage over contributors. As responsible participants observe others benefiting without contributing—or violating rules without consequence—their willingness to cooperate declines. The result can be a downward spiral of evasion, distrust, overuse, and collapse.

Garrett Hardin’s famous “tragedy of the commons” described one possible outcome, not an unavoidable law. Elinor Ostrom’s comparative research showed that communities can govern shared resources successfully under many conditions. Clear boundaries, locally appropriate rules, monitoring, graduated sanctions, conflict-resolution processes, and the ability of users to participate in rulemaking often matter. The deeper point is that stable cooperation requires institutions suited to the resource, community, scale, and threat.

Evolutionary research identifies multiple mechanisms supporting cooperation, including kin selection, direct and indirect reciprocity, network structure, group competition, reputation, norm enforcement, and punishment. These mechanisms can also misfire: punishment may become vindictive, group competition may fuel hostility, and monitoring may become surveillance. The civilizational problem is not simply insufficient punishment but repeated failure to prevent exploiters from gaining structural advantage while preserving fairness and legitimacy.

Commons failure connects directly to climate change, tax evasion, corruption, overfishing, antibiotic resistance, pollution, public-health preparedness, and attacks on democratic norms. In each case, short-term advantage can be privately captured while the cooperative system absorbs the loss.

Plain-language takeaway: Cooperation remains durable only when rules suited to the resource and community prevent exploiters from gaining lasting advantages over contributors.

8. Failure to provide universal education in rational, scientific, systemic, and metacognitive problem-solving

Many educational systems prioritize subject content, credentialing, and occupational skills more consistently than explicit instruction in how to evaluate claims, reason under uncertainty, detect manipulation, analyze causation, understand complex systems, or inspect one’s own thinking. This is a broad, evidence-informed observation rather than the result of a complete worldwide curriculum audit. Some students and traditions receive substantial instruction in these capacities, and curriculum, culture, access, and quality vary greatly.

The required capacity is larger than “being smart” or having factual knowledge. It includes logic and argument evaluation; evidence and source standards; probability and forecasting; correlation and causation; scientific reasoning; cognitive-bias awareness; media and propaganda literacy; statistical and data literacy; decision and risk analysis; feedback, scale, delay, and nonlinear change; scenario planning; ethical consequence analysis; metacognition; and, at advanced levels, dialectical and metasystemic analysis such as DMAP.

Critical thinking can be taught. Abrami and colleagues combined 341 separate estimates from experimental studies to determine how much instruction improved critical thinking. Overall, the instruction produced a modest improvement. Dialogue, practice with real-world problems, and mentoring were among the particularly helpful approaches. However, people do not automatically apply a skill learned in one setting to every other part of life. A person may learn critical thinking in a classroom yet fail to use it when judging politics, health, finance, religion, work, or evidence that challenges an important belief or part of their identity.

Existing adult-skills assessments measure a narrower range of abilities than this paper’s integrated standard. In the 2023 U.S. Survey of Adult Skills, 32 percent of U.S. adults ages 16–65 performed at Level 1 or below in adaptive problem solving. These are test-performance categories, not stages of psychological or adult development. Level 1 or below represents the lower performance range: adults in this category generally succeeded only with very simple or simple, clearly organized problems involving an obvious goal, few pieces of information, little distracting information, and a small number of steps. These problems usually did not change while the person was solving them.

At the other end, 32 percent performed at Level 3 or above. This higher performance range involved solving more complex or changing problems with multiple goals, constraints, steps, or interacting variables. Adults performing at these levels could distinguish relevant from irrelevant information, monitor their progress, anticipate some changes, compare possible solutions, and revise their strategy when necessary. The remaining 36 percent performed at Level 2, the middle range, which involved well-organized problems requiring several steps and limited adjustment when changes were clear.

NCES states that response rates were relatively low in the United States and several participating countries. Statistical adjustments reduced the apparent effects of nonresponse, but readers should still interpret the results cautiously. The assessment is important, but it does not measure the complete combination of logic, scientific reasoning, bias correction, systems thinking, metacognition, ethical consequence analysis, and advanced problem-solving discussed in this paper (NCES 2023 PIAAC results).

Most people have also never been taught to map the layered systems influencing them: markets, organizational authority, algorithms, advertising, media incentives, social identities, political institutions, and cultural assumptions. Unseen influences are easily mistaken for wholly independent choices. In Kegan’s language, people remain subject to influences they cannot yet take as objects of reflection. In dialectical analysis, they see isolated events while missing processes, relationships, contexts, and transformations.

Where these capacities are absent or fail to transfer beyond the classroom, citizens and leaders may be less equipped to judge policy tradeoffs, resist propaganda, anticipate cascading risks, or distinguish confidence from competence. Critical-thinking instruction has positive average effects, but transfer depends on pedagogy, practice, domain knowledge, motivation, and context (Abrami et al. 2015; Perkins and Salomon 1989). Leaders carry greater responsibility because their reasoning failures affect many more people, yet leadership selection rarely tests the full set of capacities described here.

Plain-language takeaway: Access to information is not enough. Citizens and leaders need repeated practice in evaluating evidence, recognizing manipulation, understanding systems, and applying those skills outside school.

9. Information corruption and collapse of shared reality

Societies cannot correct what they cannot perceive. Truthful information is the sensory and nervous system of collective action. It allows institutions to detect changing conditions, compare predictions with results, identify wrongdoing, and revise decisions.

Information can be corrupted deliberately through secrecy, censorship, propaganda, disinformation, intimidation, advertising, public-relations manipulation, selective disclosure, fabricated expertise, and attacks on credible institutions. It can also be corrupted structurally without a single deceiver: career incentives, disciplinary silos, bureaucratic filtering, concentrated ownership, algorithmic attention markets, groupthink, inadequate measurement, and fear of contradicting authority all distort what reaches the public and decision-makers.

New digital systems have altered the scale and speed of the problem. Research found that false news spread farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than truth on Twitter in the period studied, particularly for political content. Other research finds that the relationship between digital media and democracy is mixed across contexts, but identifies recurring risks involving polarization, misinformation, unequal participation, and declining trust.

Information corruption creates a self-reinforcing loop: manipulation increases distrust and polarization; distrust weakens institutional capacity; governance failure produces anger and confusion; and confusion creates new opportunities for manipulation. Competing groups may cease arguing about interpretation and instead inhabit incompatible factual worlds.

Authoritarian information control deserves special attention. Contemporary “informational autocrats” may rely less on visible mass terror than older dictatorships and more on propaganda, censorship, performance claims, media control, and selective repression. The system’s apparent stability can conceal an acute weakness: subordinates and experts learn that reporting bad news is personally dangerous.

Plain-language takeaway: Collective correction requires truthful feedback and enough shared evidence to identify problems before manipulation and fear make learning dangerous.

10. Denial, motivated reasoning, blame avoidance, and refusal to learn from wrongdoing

Information can be available and still fail to change belief or behavior. People often resist evidence that threatens identity, status, comfort, income, group loyalty, institutional legitimacy, or their image of themselves as moral and competent.

Motivated reasoning does not mean that people can believe anything they want. It means desired conclusions influence which evidence they seek, accept, challenge, remember, and explain. Confirmation bias, cognitive dissonance reduction, self-justification, identity defense, and selective memory can operate without conscious dishonesty. Strategic denial occurs when leaders or institutions understand the evidence but conceal or dispute it to avoid accountability.

Denial becomes a civilization-level cause when societies suppress historical evidence, blame victims, punish whistleblowers, protect officials from investigation, rewrite wrongdoing as heroism, treat acknowledgment as betrayal, refuse repair, and preserve institutional innocence at the expense of learning.

The recurrence loop is direct:

Harm occurs; responsibility threatens identity or power; denial blocks acknowledgment; blocked acknowledgment prevents repair and institutional learning; the causal arrangements remain; and similar harm recurs.

Denial is distinct from ordinary error. Error can be corrected when evidence arrives. Denial builds defenses against correction. It is also distinct from institutional rigidity, although the two reinforce each other: denial supplies the protective narrative, while rigid institutions preserve the rules and incentives that keep the narrative in place.

Plain-language takeaway: Mistakes become recurring harms when threats to identity or power lead people or institutions to block acknowledgment, accountability, repair, and institutional learning.

11. Short-termism, cognitive bias, and underdeveloped reflective agency

Humans and institutions systematically favor immediate, visible, emotionally vivid rewards over delayed, statistical, distributed, or uncertain consequences. Election cycles, quarterly reporting, debt obligations, emergencies, competition, and media attention reinforce this tendency.

Relevant limitations include present bias, overconfidence, confirmation bias, availability bias, normalcy bias, sunk-cost escalation, probability neglect, motivated optimism, difficulty intuiting exponential change, and preference for simple causes and villains. These are not defects found only among uninformed people. Expertise can reduce some errors while creating overconfidence or sophisticated rationalization in others.

Short-termism is often rational at one scale and destructive at another. A manager may be rewarded for reducing maintenance costs before leaving the position. A politician may benefit from delaying an unpopular investment whose benefits arrive after the next election. A household in poverty may be unable to prioritize distant risks because immediate survival is genuinely urgent. The surrounding institution converts constrained decisions into cumulative systemic harm.

Reflective agency is the capacity to notice and evaluate the assumptions, roles, loyalties, emotions, and incentives shaping one’s action. When agency is underdeveloped, people are more likely to experience socially produced expectations as self-evident reality. They may be controlled by an ideology, identity, or institutional role they cannot step back from and examine.

The combination of short time horizons and weak reflective agency is especially dangerous for climate change, debt, infrastructure maintenance, public health, nuclear deterrence, biodiversity, and AI governance—domains in which prevention costs are immediate while benefits are delayed and catastrophe may remain invisible until a threshold is crossed.

Plain-language takeaway: Choices that are understandable or rewarded today can accumulate into systemic harm when institutions ignore delayed costs and constrain people to short horizons.

12. Failure to organize cooperation at the appropriate scale

Many problems operate beyond the boundaries of the institutions assigned to manage them. Local governments cannot stabilize the global climate. Individual nations cannot independently govern international finance, pandemics, nuclear proliferation, ocean depletion, multinational corporations, cyber systems, or frontier AI. Conversely, centralized authority can become remote, unaccountable, culturally insensitive, and vulnerable to capture.

A scale mismatch occurs when the spatial, temporal, or organizational scale of governance does not match the system, risk, or resource. Authority may be local while consequences are global; budgets annual while consequences unfold over decades; scientific understanding international while enforcement remains fragmented; or centralized rules uniform while ecological and cultural conditions vary locally.

Research on social-ecological systems shows that cross-scale interactions, institutional fit, and polycentric governance matter. Lower, focal, and higher scales enable and constrain one another. A locally profitable action can degrade a river basin, climate system, market, or public institution on which the local actor depends.

This creates two symmetrical failures. Fragmentation can produce gaps, competition, regulatory arbitrage, and free-riding. Overcentralization can suppress local knowledge, experimentation, accountability, and adaptation. Civilizations repeatedly oscillate between insufficient coordination and governance that is too distant or rigid for the problem it is trying to solve.

Scale problems also arise from interstate security dilemmas and commitment failures. A state’s attempt to increase its own security can appear threatening to others, stimulating arms races, alliances, preventive-war incentives, and secrecy even when no side initially seeks catastrophe. At the same time, coordination requires administrative capacity: data, trained personnel, legitimate authority, fiscal resources, logistics, and the ability to implement decisions. A well-designed agreement can fail when institutions lack the practical capacity to carry it out. Research on cross-scale governance emphasizes spatial, temporal, jurisdictional, institutional, management, and knowledge mismatches rather than assuming one ideal level of control (Cash et al. 2006).

The cause includes temporal scale. Institutions designed around immediate performance are poorly matched to radioactive waste, climate feedbacks, infrastructure aging, ecological regeneration, demographic change, and intergenerational justice.

13. Ecological and resource overshoot

Overshoot occurs when population, consumption, extraction, and pollution exceed the regenerative and waste-absorption capacities of the underlying environment. It includes soil depletion, water scarcity, deforestation, fisheries collapse, biodiversity loss, climate destabilization, nutrient-cycle disruption, critical-material pressures, and persistent pollution.

Overshoot is both a causal driver and a boundary condition. It does not explain why societies choose particular institutions, distribute losses unfairly, or suppress warnings. It does establish physical limits that political and economic narratives cannot repeal. A society can redistribute depletion, postpone recognition, substitute resources, increase efficiency, or move impacts elsewhere, but it cannot indefinitely consume regenerative systems faster than they recover.

The peer-reviewed 2023 planetary-boundaries assessment reported six of nine boundaries transgressed. A separate Planetary Health Check 2025 assessment reported seven of nine, adding ocean acidification. (The 2025 report is a scientific assessment rather than a new peer-reviewed replacement for every element of the 2023 study, so the two findings are reported separately.)

Boundaries represent increasing zones of risk and uncertainty; they are not a countdown to a single collapse date. The IPCC concludes that climate risks and losses increase with each increment of warming, while IPBES documents widespread deterioration of biodiversity and ecosystem services. These assessments differ in method and scope but converge on large-scale alteration of life-support systems.

Ecological decline amplifies injustice because vulnerability and political power are uneven. Groups receiving the greatest historical benefits from extraction are often not the groups facing the greatest immediate damages. Future generations inherit depleted systems without participating in the decisions that created the loss.

Overshoot also interacts with nearly every other cause: short-term incentives reward extraction; captured institutions weaken limits; misinformation delays response; denial protects identities and profits; scale mismatch fragments management; inequality determines exposure; and scarcity can intensify migration, conflict, repression, and state failure.

Plain-language takeaway: Physical limits cannot be negotiated away. Overshoot reduces the room for peaceful correction and usually harms people with the least power first.

14. Rigid, identity-bound, and non-falsifiable belief systems in governance

Religious traditions have supported compassion, charity, meaning, self-restraint, education, resistance to oppression, and cooperation. They become dangerous when sacred authority is used to place political claims beyond evidence, revision, criticism, or equal law.

The same mechanism appears in secular ideologies. Nationalism, racial doctrines, revolutionary dogmas, leader cults, and rigid economic theories can function like religions when their central claims become identity-defining, morally absolute, and immune to disconfirming evidence.

Key mechanisms include sacred-value protection, identity fusion, purity tests, moral licensing, demonization, suppression of dissent, clerical or party capture, and elite use of belief to mobilize or control populations. Research on sacred values shows that adding material incentives to proposed compromises can sometimes increase outrage among moral absolutists rather than make agreement easier.

Non-falsifiable governance occurs when policy success is interpreted as proof of the doctrine while failure is blamed on insufficient loyalty, hidden enemies, impure implementation, or the population itself. Because no evidence is allowed to count against the belief, the system loses a basic correction mechanism.

Ideology is unavoidable in the broad sense that humans organize meaning through values and models. The civilizational danger is rigid belief governance: the fusion of power with a system that cannot admit error, recognize plural perspectives, or revise itself without threatening the identity and status of its guardians.

Plain-language takeaway: Religious or secular beliefs become a governance danger when they place policies beyond evidence, equal rights, criticism, and revision.

15. Institutional rigidity, path dependence, organizational defensiveness, and failure to adapt

Institutions are created under particular historical conditions. Their laws, infrastructure, routines, professions, revenue streams, and identities embody earlier choices. As people invest in those arrangements, changing direction becomes more expensive even after the original pathway becomes harmful. This is path dependence.

Institutions also develop constituencies that benefit from the existing structure. Procedures can become more important than purposes. Leaders protect sunk costs, careers, prestige, and legitimacy. Warning information is filtered, dissenters are labeled disloyal, and failure is reinterpreted to justify further investment in the same approach.

Chris Argyris described organizational defensive routines as actions that protect people and institutions from embarrassment or threat while preventing them from learning how to remove the source of the threat. James March distinguished exploitation of established knowledge from exploration of alternatives; too much of either can be destructive. Organizations can fail by refusing to change or by abandoning accumulated competence in perpetual novelty.

Path dependence does not mean change is impossible. It means history alters the cost, feasibility, and political distribution of change. A once-successful institution can become dangerous when it continues applying yesterday’s effective strategy after environmental, technological, demographic, or geopolitical conditions have shifted.

Institutional rigidity is a core reason civilizations fail to learn from earlier collapse. Records and warnings may survive, but the organizations responsible for acting on them often have incentives to deny relevance, defend identity, and preserve existing authority until crisis makes orderly adaptation much more difficult.

Plain-language takeaway: Institutions preserve yesterday’s successful path until its rules, interests, and identities make timely adaptation harder than crisis-driven change.

16. Authoritarianism, coercion, and the security-overhead trap

When legitimacy and voluntary cooperation decline, rulers often substitute surveillance, censorship, punishment, militarization, propaganda, and coercion. These tools can suppress visible disorder and mobilize resources rapidly. Their short-term effectiveness helps explain their recurrence.

The long-term costs are severe. Fear discourages truthful reporting. Officials conceal failure, citizens falsify preferences, opponents move underground, innovation narrows, and leaders become increasingly dependent on information supplied by people whose careers require telling them what they want to hear.

The resulting security-overhead trap is self-reinforcing:

Declining legitimacy produces greater coercion; coercion further damages legitimacy and truthful feedback; maintaining control requires still more surveillance and force; and the growing security apparatus consumes resources needed for genuine problem-solving.

Authoritarian systems are not the only systems that coerce, and democracies can maintain unjust security structures. The defining problem is the weak accountability of coercive power and the shrinking ability to challenge it without retaliation.

Current evidence makes this cause more than historical. The V-Dem Democracy Report 2026 describes autocratization as the dominant global trend since the early 2010s and identifies 44 countries undergoing autocratization in 2025. Its classifications are one research program’s measurements and should not be treated as uncontested truth, but the direction and scale of the reported trend are consequential.

Plain-language takeaway: Coercion may suppress symptoms briefly, but it damages legitimacy and truthful information, often making still more coercion appear necessary.

17. Excessive complexity and diminishing returns

Societies solve problems by adding laws, bureaucracies, infrastructure, military systems, technologies, specialists, reporting requirements, and administrative layers. Complexity is therefore a major human achievement. It coordinates strangers, preserves knowledge, enables medicine and science, and supports services impossible in small communities.

Joseph Tainter’s influential argument is that investments in complexity can experience diminishing marginal returns. Early layers of organization solve large problems. Later layers may deliver smaller gains while requiring more energy, taxation, maintenance, monitoring, and coordination. Rules accumulate, exceptions multiply, and systems become harder for participants to understand.

Excessive or poorly designed complexity can produce administrative overload, slow decisions, obscure accountability, reduced local flexibility, dependence on scarce expertise, and large consequences when a critical component fails. Specialized parts may optimize their own performance while damaging the larger system.

Complexity becomes most dangerous when energy, ecological resources, public finance, competence, or political legitimacy are declining. Institutions can no longer afford existing layers but cannot simplify them without threatening jobs, identities, services, contracts, and power. Attempts to solve complexity by adding another oversight layer may increase the burden.

The relationship is not linear. Network research shows that diversity and connectivity can improve robustness under some conditions and create cascade risk under others. The problem is therefore not “complexity is bad.” It is complexity whose benefits, costs, dependencies, failure modes, and simplification pathways are poorly understood.

Nor does contraction of complexity automatically mean that a society or culture has vanished. Archaeologists have documented cases in which palaces, dynasties, tax systems, or monumental centers disappeared while communities persisted, migrated, reorganized, or improved particular aspects of health and freedom. Other contractions destroyed public safety, trade, food security, medicine, infrastructure, and specialized knowledge. Cause 17 must therefore be evaluated with the collapse taxonomy in Section 2: what complexity declined, whose burdens were reduced, whose essential capabilities were lost, and whether failure remained regional and recoverable or spread through indispensable life-support systems.

Plain-language takeaway: Complexity is an achievement until its maintenance costs, hidden dependencies, and opacity exceed the system’s resources, competence, legitimacy, or resilience.

18. Globalization, tight coupling, dependency, and loss of resilience

Global integration has enlarged markets, spread knowledge, enabled specialization, connected cultures, reduced some forms of scarcity, and supported unprecedented cooperation. It has also allowed shocks to travel rapidly across borders and systems.

Tight coupling exists when processes are closely timed, components have little slack, and a failure in one area quickly affects others. Just-in-time supply chains, financial networks, globally connected cyber systems, agricultural monocultures, interdependent infrastructure, and concentration of critical production can all create this condition.

Efficiency frequently eliminates redundancy, spare capacity, local production, inventories, diversity, and backup systems because they appear wasteful during normal operation. Yet those apparently inefficient reserves provide resilience when conditions depart from the model.

Network science shows why simple intuitions fail. Connectivity can distribute risk in ordinary conditions but also provide pathways for contagion. Interdependent networks may undergo abrupt collapse when failures cross between systems. Concentration in a small number of highly connected nodes can make the system efficient and fragile simultaneously.

This cause incorporates a globalization penalty: actions optimized for one organization or country can create vulnerabilities for the larger network. Local self-reliance alone cannot solve global problems, but global integration without regional redundancy, diversity, visibility, and backup capacity creates extreme fragility.

Plain-language takeaway: Efficiency without diversity, visibility, spare capacity, and backup systems can turn local failures into fast-moving global shocks.

19. Technology advancing faster than governance, ethics, and human development

Technology increases humanity’s power faster than it necessarily increases wisdom, restraint, accountability, or collective coordination. Successive technologies have amplified conquest, extraction, industrial warfare, fossil-fuel consumption, surveillance, propaganda, nuclear destruction, cyber disruption, engineered biological risk, and artificial-intelligence capabilities.

Technology is not inherently dysfunctional. It has also increased health, safety, education, communication, forecasting, accessibility, and environmental monitoring. Its effects depend on purposes, incentives, institutions, access, and failure modes. In captured systems, greater capability can give narrow interests unprecedented reach.

David Collingridge identified a central governance dilemma: early in a technology’s development, its consequences are uncertain and control appears premature; after diffusion, consequences become clearer but control becomes expensive because infrastructures, interests, and dependencies are entrenched. This dilemma helps explain why societies repeatedly deploy first and govern after harm becomes visible.

Nuclear weapons demonstrate the civilization-scale amplification of leadership error, false warning, technical failure, and group conflict. Synthetic biology and cyber capabilities can diffuse dangerous knowledge and tools. The 2026 International AI Safety Report describes rapid advances and a heterogeneous set of risks involving misuse, malfunction, systemic effects, and uncertain future capabilities; it also emphasizes major uncertainty rather than claiming inevitable catastrophe.

Artificial intelligence is also a cross-causal amplifier rather than merely one more technology. Depending on its design, ownership, incentives, and use, AI can intensify institutional capture, mass persuasion and information corruption, surveillance and authoritarian control, overreliance on automated recommendations, cyber and biological misuse, labor displacement and inequality, correlated failure when many institutions depend on similar systems, and delegation of consequential decisions to increasingly autonomous tools. Concentration adds a second risk: a small number of model developers, cloud providers, chip manufacturers, data holders, and investors can become shared points of dependency and rule-setting. The International AI Safety Report 2026 examines misuse, malfunction, systemic risks, labor effects, human autonomy, and concentration of power; the Stanford AI Index 2026 reports that industry produced more than 90 percent of notable frontier models in 2025 and documents major hardware and infrastructure dependencies; and the FTC staff study of cloud-provider–AI-developer partnerships identifies potential input restrictions, switching costs, and information advantages. These findings support careful attention to concentrated control while leaving substantial uncertainty about future capability, adoption, and net social effects.

The historical pattern is a governance gap: capability development receives concentrated rewards and investment, while safety, accountability, international coordination, long-term monitoring, and public understanding develop more slowly.

Plain-language takeaway: When capability grows faster than wisdom, restraint, and governance, ordinary human and institutional failures acquire much larger consequences.

20. Systemic coupling, polycrisis, neglect of low-probability, high-impact risks, and cascading failure

Climate disruption, food shocks, water scarcity, debt, banking stress, geopolitical conflict, misinformation, pandemics, migration, biodiversity loss, AI failures, nuclear escalation, and declining legitimacy do not operate separately. They share drivers, transmit shocks, and weaken the systems needed to manage one another.

Recent polycrisis scholarship identifies three broad mechanisms of crisis entanglement: common stresses affecting several systems, domino effects in which one crisis triggers another, and intersystem feedbacks and tipping points that amplify both. A global crisis can emerge when slow-moving stresses and fast triggers push systems out of their established equilibrium.

Complex systems contain delays, thresholds, feedback loops, nonlinear dynamics, and long-tail risks. Damage can accumulate while a system appears stable, followed by rapid transformation after a threshold has been crossed. Interventions can also produce unexpected consequences because the causal network extends beyond the part being managed.

A typical cascade might proceed as follows: climate damage reduces food production; food prices increase debt and unrest; instability accelerates migration and polarization; polarization strengthens authoritarian movements; conflict weakens international coordination; and weakened governments have fewer resources for adaptation, health, infrastructure, and disaster response. These interactions can also increase the risk of regional conflict and, through escalation, nuclear use.

Institutions routinely analyze risks in separate departments, fund prevention according to recent experience, and discount low-probability events. Those habits fail when the principal danger lies in interaction. Neglect of low-probability, high-impact risks is especially consequential when harm is irreversible or globally catastrophic, even if probability estimates remain uncertain.

The present polycrisis is therefore not merely the twentieth item on a list. It is an emergent amplifier and risk multiplier created when many preceding drivers, mechanisms, structural conditions, and stressors operate simultaneously. It should not be called a root cause at the same causal level as evolved predispositions, institutional capture, or ecological limits. 

Plain-language takeaway: The greatest danger may lie in interactions among crises that amplify one another and disable the institutions needed to respond.

4. A DMAP Audit of the 20 Causes for Completeness, Omissions, or Other Problems

This advanced section is intended primarily for researchers and critics, but it remains available to any reader who wants to examine our Red Team final audit in detail. Otto Laske’s 28 dialectical thought forms, which are foundational to the new DMAP methodology, provide a highly structured framework for examining processes, contexts, relationships, and transformations. In this paper, DMAP was used to identify patterns, contradictions, feedbacks, missing relationships, thresholds, critical absences, and alternative pathways. It is an analytical aid, not proof that the framework is complete or superior to every other method. Please also note that this DMAP audit process does not add a twenty-first causal element. It changes how the existing 20 causal elements are understood.

4.1: Process from stated terms to developing historical trajectories

Thought Form 1—unceasing motion and contradiction: none of the 20 elements is a timeless object. Power concentration, denial, overshoot, and authoritarianism are activities and trajectories: they grow, meet resistance, change form, and sometimes reverse. A society may become more inclusive in one domain while becoming more extractive in another. “Cause” is therefore shorthand for an evolving causal process.

Thought Form 2—preserving what is valid in an apparent opposite: the audit retains the productive side of phenomena that can become destructive. Cooperation can produce domination, but cooperation is also indispensable. Complexity can generate fragility, but it also creates medicine, law, and public administration. Central coordination can suppress local knowledge, while fragmentation can make global problems ungovernable. A defensible analysis must preserve both sides without pretending they are equally beneficial in every context.

Thought Form 3—interpenetrating opposites: many central tensions are not separable choices between good and bad. Efficiency and resilience, liberty and collective security, stability and adaptation, leadership and constraint, competition and cooperation, identity and pluralism, local autonomy and global coordination, expertise and democracy, and present welfare and future protection partly depend on one another. The failure often lies in their relationship and balance, not in one pole alone.

Thought Form 4—patterns of interaction: the causal unit is often a loop. Capture weakens accountability; weak accountability permits extraction; extraction increases inequality; inequality increases political influence for beneficiaries; influence deepens capture. A different loop links injustice, legitimacy, coercion, and information: unfairness reduces legitimacy; rulers substitute coercion; fear corrupts feedback; poor information worsens decisions; failure further reduces legitimacy. Feedback polarity, delays, and strength must be specified rather than represented by decorative arrows.

Thought Form 5—the practical and active character of knowledge: a useful diagnosis should generate observable propositions even when this paper defers solutions. Examples include: warning information should be less likely to alter policy where messengers bear high personal costs; closely coupled systems should transmit shocks faster when redundancy declines; and concentrated benefits with diffuse delayed costs should predict weaker prevention. Such propositions can be compared with cases, datasets, process tracing, and future events. The framework is not protected from disconfirmation merely because it is broad.

Thought Form 6—critique of reification: calling the 20 items “root causes” risked freezing processes into nouns and treating unlike causal levels as equivalent. The layered architecture corrects this. “Leadership failure,” for example, may mean a changing selection system, a leader-team relationship, a breakdown of administrative capacity, an information bottleneck, or a succession crisis. “Polycrisis” is an emergent interaction pattern, not a thing that independently acts.

Thought Form 7—embedding in movement: each causal configuration should be read through a temporal sequence. Research on path dependence, increasing returns, critical junctures, gradual institutional change, and morphogenesis shows that institutions are formed, reproduced, contested, layered, converted, displaced, or allowed to drift over time (Pierson 2000; Mahoney and Thelen 2010; Archer 1995).

General process sequence

Initial conditions → formation of a mechanism → institutionalization → reproduction and positive feedback → accumulated contradictions and externalized costs → stress or critical juncture → adaptation, repression, displacement, fragmentation, transformation, or collapse.

This sequence is not a universal cycle. Institutional change may also be gradual through displacement, layering, drift, conversion, and changed enforcement. Some harmful arrangements persist for centuries without collapse because their costs are transferred outward or downward.

 

4.2 Context: wholes, boundaries, layers, stability, and multiple settings 

Thought Form 8—parts within a whole: each element gains meaning from the larger social-ecological system in which it operates. A biased official inside a transparent, well-audited institution differs from the same official inside a captured institution that rewards concealment. Ostrom’s social-ecological systems framework separates actors, governance systems, resource systems, interactions, outcomes, and wider settings, helping prevent “civilization” from being treated as one undifferentiated whole (Ostrom 2009).

Thought Form 9—the equilibrium or functioning of the whole: harmful systems do not persist only because people fail to notice them. They may be actively stabilized by material rewards, dependency, legitimacy narratives, fear, coordination barriers, inherited advantage, network position, institutional memory, and suppression of alternatives. What appears to be equilibrium may be a continuously maintained political accomplishment rather than passive balance.

Thought Form 10—structures, functions, layers, and strata: the framework now distinguishes human predispositions, knowledge conditions, power and incentive mechanisms, institutional configurations, ecological and technological boundary conditions, and systemic amplifiers. The same institution may perform several functions: taxation can fund public goods, finance coercion, redistribute wealth, or enable extraction. Analysts must identify both structure and function instead of inferring purpose from official labels.

Thought Form 11—hierarchical and nested systems: households are nested in organizations and jurisdictions; states are nested in international systems and the biosphere. Lower-level activity enables higher-level order, while higher-level law, infrastructure, markets, and ecology constrain lower-level choices. A corporation may be rationally maximizing within market rules while the market damages the planetary system on which every firm depends. Cross-scale governance research shows that mismatches can be spatial, temporal, jurisdictional, institutional, managerial, or epistemic.

Thought Form 12—stability of system functioning: earlier in this paper we explained breakdown better than stability. Stability depends on buffers, reserves, repair capacity, legitimate enforcement, redundancy, trust, competent administration, reliable information, and balancing feedback. Resilience is not identical to justice: an unjust regime can be resilient, and a just reform can be temporarily destabilizing. Research distinguishes resilience, adaptability within an existing system, and transformability into a different system (Walker et al. 2004).

Thought Form 13—frames, traditions, and ideologies: this paper is not frame-free. It uses systems theory, DMAP, long-term common well-being, rights, justice, ecological viability, and a largely research-oriented evidentiary standard. These commitments help reveal capture, externalized harm, and delayed consequences, but they can underweight meanings, duties, spiritual traditions, local knowledge, and historical experiences not easily represented in systems language. The framework’s institutional, evolutionary, Western academic, and normative assumptions must remain open to criticism.

Thought Form 14—multiplicity of contexts: mechanisms vary across cultures, regions, political economies, ecologies, technologies, and historical periods. Evidence from modern literate states cannot simply be projected backward ten thousand years. Nor should findings from Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic populations be presumed universal. Feminist, postcolonial, Indigenous, peace-and-conflict, legal, disability, labor, public-administration, and Global South research may identify relationships that a state-centered English-language synthesis misses.

A boundary-conscious analysis asks six questions:

    1. What is the focal system?
    2. What lower-level systems enable it?
    3. What higher-level systems constrain it?
    4. What spatial and temporal boundaries are being used?
    5. Whose interests, knowledge, labor, and harms fall outside those boundaries?
    6. What mechanisms stabilize the arrangement despite its injustices or ecological costs?

 

4.3 Relationship: power, dependence, value conflict, and mutual constitution

Thought Form 15—the limits of separation: leaders and followers, states and markets, citizens and institutions, present decision-makers and future consequence-bearers, and civilization and biosphere are analytically distinguishable but not truly independent. A market exists through law, norms, infrastructures, and enforceable relationships. A leader’s power exists through followers, officials, resources, and institutions. Ecological systems are not external scenery; they constitute the material conditions of society.

Thought Form 16—the value of bringing elements into relationship: the paper combines disciplines that use different units, methods, and meanings of causation. Integration must occur through explicit mechanisms—such as incentive transfer, institutional reproduction, feedback, constraint, and threshold—rather than by placing impressive citations beside one another. Where disciplines disagree, the disagreement should be preserved rather than smoothed into artificial consensus.

Thought Form 17—critique of reductionism: one mechanism can never serve as the whole explanation for Bhopal, the Holocaust, World War I, famine, or collapse. The historical section’s assignment of one emphasized mechanism is a navigation device. Each case is a configuration in which causes operate jointly, and the same visible outcome can arise through different pathways.

Thought Form 18—related value and judgment systems: societies must negotiate conflicts among liberty, equality, security, sustainability, sovereignty, tradition, solidarity, recognition, responsibility, and common well-being. These values are neither automatically harmonious nor always zero-sum. Expanding security can protect rights or suppress them. Protecting tradition can sustain identity or preserve domination. Growth can reduce poverty or accelerate overshoot. The analysis must disclose which values are prioritized, by whom, and at whose cost.

Thought Form 19—structural aspects of relationship: injustice is reproduced through durable positions and transactions: ruler and ruled; owner and worker; creditor and debtor; colonizer and colonized; enslaver and enslaved; citizen and excluded noncitizen; patriarchal authority and subordinated gender; center and periphery; professional gatekeeper and dependent client; present decision-maker and future consequence-bearer; extractive institution and dependent ecosystem. These are not merely personal attitudes. They distribute resources, voice, exit options, risk, legal standing, and the ability to define reality.

Thought Form 20—interaction patterns within relationships: every major relationship should be examined dynamically. Who controls resources and rules? Who depends on whom? Who can exit? Who can speak without retaliation? Who receives benefits? Who absorbs risks? How do monitoring, bargaining, resistance, care, coercion, reciprocity, and dependency change over time? Tilly’s relational account of durable inequality and the World Bank’s analysis of power asymmetries, exclusion, capture, clientelism, bargaining, coordination, and commitment provide empirical and institutional bridges (Tilly 1998; World Development Report 2017).

Thought Form 21—constitutive and intrinsic relationships: some relationships create the identities and capacities of the actors they connect. “Employer,” “citizen,” “debtor,” “ruler,” and “refugee” are not complete properties carried by isolated individuals; they arise within legal and social relationships. Institutions are reproduced when people act through these positions, but people can also reflect, resist, reinterpret, and transform them. Archer’s morphogenetic approach is useful here because it separates prior structural and cultural conditioning, social interaction, and subsequent reproduction or transformation without reducing agency to structure or structure to personal choice.

 

4.4 Transformation: thresholds, conflict, coordination, agency, and branching futures

Thought Form 22—limits of stability and quantitative-to-qualitative change: Gradual accumulation can produce a sudden change in kind. Rising debt may appear manageable until refinancing fails; ecological pressure may build until an ecosystem shifts into a different condition; and distrust may accumulate until routine disagreement becomes a crisis of legitimacy. Threshold research can sometimes identify warning signs, but it cannot provide reliable universal predictions.

Hysteresis means that a system retains the effects of its history. Once the system has changed, merely reducing the original pressure to its earlier level may not restore the earlier condition. Recovery may require much greater pressure reduction, active reconstruction, a different intervention, or a long period of time. Irreversibility is more severe: the earlier condition cannot be restored, or cannot be restored within the human or ecological time period that matters. Hysteresis is therefore not necessarily permanent, whereas irreversible loss is permanent or effectively permanent. Species extinction is irreversible; destroyed trust, lost institutional expertise, and damaged ecosystems may exhibit hysteresis because recovery can remain possible but does not occur automatically (Scheffer et al. 2009).

Thought Form 23—conflict as a possible source of developmental change: conflict is not only destructive. Labor organizing, anticolonial struggle, civil-rights movements, resistance to dictatorship, whistleblowing, litigation, scientific controversy, and Indigenous defense of land have sometimes exposed contradictions and produced rights expansion or institutional learning. Conflict can also generate repression, polarization, civil war, or new domination. Its effects depend on power, organization, framing, institutions, external support, and available nonviolent pathways.

Thought Form 24—developmental potential toward higher functioning: diagnosis should not imply that collapse is destiny. Individuals can enlarge reflective agency; institutions can improve information, fairness, and coordination; societies can extend rights and repair some ecological damage. These gains remain conditional, incomplete, contested, and reversible. The proper question is not whether history automatically progresses, but which conditions make more just, truthful, cooperative, resilient functioning possible—and which conditions reverse it.

Thought Form 25—evaluative comparison of transforming systems: cases should be compared using declared criteria: protection of life and rights; distribution of benefits and burdens; truthfulness and learning; legitimacy and participation; ecological viability; institutional capacity; resilience; reversibility of harm; and ability to coordinate across scales. Comparison must include catastrophes, near-misses, stable but unjust regimes, partial reforms, successful corrections, and transformations that solved one problem while creating another.

Thought Form 26—coordination of systems: coordination is a process, not an organizational chart. It requires shared problem definitions, information exchange, authority, resources, conflict-resolution procedures, accountability, compatible time horizons, and mechanisms for revising commitments. Coordination can be horizontal across organizations, vertical across levels, or polycentric among partially independent centers. It fails through jurisdictional gaps, incompatible incentives, mistrust, inadequate capacity, veto points, or domination disguised as coordination.

Thought Form 27—open and self-transforming systems: societies exchange energy, materials, information, organisms, people, capital, and risk with their environments. They are changed by migration, trade, conquest, disease, climate, and imported ideas. No civilization is a closed machine with a predetermined cycle. Openness creates vulnerability and learning. Transformation can emerge from internal contradiction, external shock, innovation, resistance, or cross-scale interaction.

Thought Form 28—integration of multiple viewpoints and critique of formalism: no diagram, equation, taxonomy, or 20-item list is reality itself. Formal models illuminate by excluding detail. The final audit therefore asks what the model cannot see, whose knowledge is absent, which categories were imposed, and where its language turns contested judgments into apparently neutral facts. Integrating perspectives does not mean declaring every claim equally valid; it means testing rival interpretations against evidence while preserving legitimate differences in context, value, and lived experience.

Methodological caution: The headings below are a public-facing, copyright-safe summary of insights prompted by Otto Laske’s four classes and 28 thought forms. They are not a reproduction of Laske’s scoring manual, do not claim that the paper received a formal DTF score, and do not establish the author’s cognitive profile.

4.5 Operational systems thinking model: stocks, flows, loops, delays, thresholds, and recovery limits

The earlier causal narrative named feedbacks without specifying enough system behavior. The following analytical map makes the systems model more testable.

4.6 Additional mechanisms revealed by Systems Theory and DMAP final audit

Local rationality and higher-order harm: an action can be sensible for a household, firm, agency, or state while cumulatively destroying the larger system. Competitive pressure may punish an organization that maintains costly safety reserves when rivals do not. A poor household’s short horizon may reflect genuine constraint, not ignorance. Analysis must distinguish individual rationality under current rules from collective viability.

Metric gaming and goal displacement: once a measure becomes a high-stakes target, actors can improve the number while degrading the purpose it was meant to represent. Production quotas can encourage false reporting; school testing can narrow learning; arrest targets can distort policing; emissions accounting can move pollution across borders. The problem is not measurement itself but incentives that detach a proxy from the system’s actual goal. Campbell’s analysis of corruption pressures on social indicators and Strathern’s account of audit and rankings provide established formulations of this mechanism (Campbell 1979; Strathern 1997).

Rebound and risk-compensation effects: efficiency can reduce the cost of resource use and thereby increase total use. Added safety can sometimes encourage greater exposure to risk. These effects are not universal or always complete, but they show why an intervention’s first-order benefit may be partly offset by behavioral and system response.

Requisite variety: governance must possess enough relevant information and enough distinct response options to match the complexity of the disturbances it faces. Monoculture, centralized information bottlenecks, suppressed dissent, and uniform rules can reduce response variety. Diversity without coordination can produce fragmentation, so variety and integration must develop together. This principle is adapted from W. Ross Ashby’s foundational cybernetic treatment of regulation and requisite variety (Ashby 1956).

Correlated failure and monoculture: systems that appear diversified may share the same model, supplier, crop genetics, software, funding source, or assumption. Under ordinary conditions they seem independent; under common stress they fail together. This mechanism connects financial herding, agricultural monoculture, cloud-service concentration, and standardized risk models.

Slow variables and fast triggers: soil loss, inequality, institutional decay, polarization, debt, and climate pressure may accumulate slowly. A drought, assassination, bank failure, election, price spike, or technical accident can then trigger a rapid change whose deeper conditions were years in development.

Structural-demographic instability: Jack Goldstone, Peter Turchin, Sergey Nefedov, and related researchers describe a recurring configuration, not a universal clock. Population or labor-supply pressures can depress wages and opportunities while popular immiseration and grievance rise. When elite aspirants grow faster than the available high-status positions, frustrated aspirants may become counter-elites and intra-elite competition may intensify. At the same time, state finances, legitimacy, and administrative capacity can deteriorate. A trigger can then produce polarization, rebellion, repression, state breakdown, or reform. The mechanism is valuable because it connects inequality, demography, elite overproduction, fiscal stress, and political conflict instead of treating them as separate warning lights (Turchin’s structural-demographic overview). Its variables, timing, and fit vary across historical and modern societies.

Socialization, cultural transmission, and intergenerational institutional reproduction: societies reproduce both cooperation and dysfunction by teaching people how to interpret authority, status, identity, evidence, obligation, dissent, culture, and acceptable treatment of others. Child-rearing, schooling, religion, law, professional training, organizational onboarding, media, ritual, language, and everyday role expectations transmit norms and behavioral scripts across generations and into new institutional members. In process, patterns are learned, repeated, modified, and passed on; in context, different families, schools, professions, markets, governments, and media environments reward different capacities; in relationship, parent–child, teacher–student, leader–follower, employer–worker, expert–public, and citizen–state relations carry expectations and power; and in transformation, durable reform requires changing how people are formed and inducted, not merely replacing rules or officeholders. Cultural-evolution research shows the importance of social learning, norm transmission, and cumulative culture while also documenting substantial variation rather than one universal socialization pathway (Boyd and Richerson 1985; Henrich 2016). This mechanism can reproduce domination, but it can also transmit empathy, truth-seeking, reciprocity, democratic practice, resistance, and ecological stewardship.

Hidden functions, credible commitment, and functional replacement: an unjust institution may persist partly because it performs a necessary function—containing violence, coordinating powerful factions, collecting revenue, settling disputes, or making commitments credible—even while distributing privileges and harms unfairly. North, Wallis, and Weingast describe limited-access orders in which rents help powerful groups refrain from fighting. The World Development Report 2017 similarly emphasizes credible commitment, coordination, cooperation, power asymmetry, and institutional function. Removing a predatory arrangement without replacing every essential function can produce civil war, state failure, or a new predatory coalition. This does not excuse injustice. It establishes a demanding transition rule: identify the visible and hidden functions of the institution, then build a fairer replacement capable of performing them before or while dismantling the old arrangement.

Social and ecological debt: systems can maintain apparent performance by deferring maintenance, exhausting trust, underfunding care, borrowing against future revenue, depleting ecosystems, or shifting damage beyond the accounting boundary. The resulting liability may not appear in the institution’s current budget even though it reduces future freedom and resilience.

Displacement of harm: a reform can improve outcomes inside one jurisdiction or generation while transferring extraction, pollution, violence, debt, or vulnerability elsewhere. Evaluation must therefore follow supply chains, migration routes, financial liabilities, emissions, waste, and intergenerational effects beyond the visible boundary.

Exogenous shocks and contingency: not every catastrophe begins inside the social system. Droughts, pathogens, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, solar events, and unexpected technologies may be external or partly external to the focal institutions. The 20 elements often determine whether a shock is absorbed, amplified, concealed, unjustly distributed, or converted into catastrophe. They do not cause every initiating hazard.

4.7 Equifinality, multifinality, and the branching transformation model

Equifinality means that similar outcomes can arise through different causal pathways. Famine can result from drought, war, market failure, forced procurement, state collapse, blockade, or combinations of these. Authoritarianism can emerge through conquest, coup, electoral erosion, revolution, emergency powers, or institutional decay.

Multifinality means that similar starting pressures can produce different outcomes. A fiscal crisis can lead to reform, austerity, default, repression, revolution, external assistance, or administrative innovation. A disaster can strengthen solidarity or accelerate scapegoating and capture. Explanation therefore requires branching conditions, not one recurring sequence treated as a law.

Branching transformation model

Accumulating contradiction or shock may produce successful adaptation, superficial reform, displacement of harm, restoration of the prior order, authoritarian consolidation, fragmentation, revolutionary replacement, ecological regime shift, collapse of a ruling order, loss of state capacity, failure of essential life-support systems, or transformation toward higher functioning.

The branch taken depends on institutional capacity, legitimacy, organized power, access to truthful information, available alternatives, ecological and fiscal room, leadership, social movements, external support, timing, and contingency. The framework can identify conditions and mechanisms, but it cannot turn history into a deterministic forecast.

The same event can also move different groups onto different branches. A regime may collapse while communities persist; elites may lose wealth while previously subordinated people gain freedom; or formal political continuity may conceal collapse in food security, public health, care, or ecological capacity. Every outcome assessment must therefore specify the unit, scale, population, and time horizon being evaluated.

5. Why Dysfunction and Injustice Keep Recurring

The 20 interacting elements explain recurrence through four powerful properties: they are mutually reinforcing, multi-scale, selection-shaping, and resistant to correction.

They are mutually reinforcing. Concentrated power weakens consequence capture; weak consequence capture increases extraction; extraction increases injustice; injustice damages legitimacy; declining legitimacy encourages coercion; coercion corrupts information; corrupted information protects poor leadership and delays adaptation.

They operate across scales. Individual bias can become organizational routine; organizational routine can become law; national incentives can produce global externalities; global stresses can destabilize households and communities. No single level contains the whole cause.

They shape who and what succeeds. Institutions do not merely constrain behavior; they select it. If deception, extraction, loyalty, or risk transfer are rewarded, people and organizations skilled at those behaviors accumulate influence. If responsible actors bear costs while free-riders keep advantages, the system can progressively remove its own correctives.

They defend themselves against learning. Capture controls appointments and rules. Ideology protects identity. Denial protects moral innocence. Propaganda protects legitimacy. Complexity obscures responsibility. Path dependence raises the cost of change. Coercion silences warnings. By the time failure becomes undeniable, orderly correction may be far more difficult.

The strongest answer to the paper’s central question

Ten thousand years of recurring dysfunction and injustice persist not primarily because humanity has failed to discover good moral principles. Civilizations have articulated many admirable principles. Recurrence persists because societies have repeatedly failed to build and preserve evolvable, multi-scale, non-captured institutions that align incentives with common well-being, keep decision-makers connected to consequences, protect pro-social contributors, restrain free-riding and domination, select and constrain capable leaders, preserve truthful feedback, distribute rights and burdens fairly, remain within ecological limits, and adapt before crisis closes the available pathways.

This conclusion does not reduce history to institutions alone. Human psychology, culture, ecology, technology, chance, and individual agency matter. It states that moral aspiration becomes historically durable only when the surrounding causal system does not reward its violation and disable its correction.

6. Historical Catastrophe Examples

The following cases illustrate how the 20 causes have operated in consequential history. They are not proofs that one cause alone produced each event. Every catastrophe was multi-causal, and historians dispute the weight of particular mechanisms. The purpose is to show that the framework’s abstractions correspond to observable patterns: transferred consequences, captured authority, distorted information, identity mobilization, ecological pressure, rigid institutions, technological amplification, and cascading failure.

The cases were selected for documentation, severity, diversity of mechanism, and explanatory value—not as a representative statistical sample of all civilizations. The emphasized mechanism is a teaching device rather than a verdict about historical primacy. Readers should consult the linked cause-by-cause bibliography and bibliography subsection V’s case-specific sources; those sources include official investigations, primary databases, peer-reviewed research, and major historical syntheses. Section 7 adds ancient and premodern coverage, near-misses, and successful corrections to test whether the framework can explain divergent outcomes as well as failure.

Example 1 — The Bhopal gas disaster, 1984: consequences transferred away from decision-makers

A toxic methyl isocyanate release from the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal killed thousands and injured many more; estimates vary by time horizon and source. Investigations and scholarship identified interacting technical, maintenance, training, organizational, regulatory, and emergency-preparedness failures. The people experiencing the greatest exposure had little control over plant design, cost decisions, land-use conditions, or corporate and governmental oversight.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 1, failed consequence capture. Interacting causes: injustice, institutional capture, information failure, leadership, and technology governance. Bhopal demonstrates how industrial benefits can be organizationally separated from catastrophic risk and how accountability becomes difficult across corporate, legal, and national boundaries. The case remains contested in details of responsibility and long-term death totals; the broad pattern of transferred risk is not.

Example 2 — The Congo Free State, 1885–1908: concentrated power converted into extraction

King Leopold II’s personal rule over the Congo Free State used concessionary companies, armed coercion, hostage-taking, forced labor, and violence to extract rubber and ivory. Population loss was enormous, although precise estimates are uncertain because no reliable census existed at the beginning. The system tied local survival and official reward to extraction quotas while insulating ultimate beneficiaries from daily brutality.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 2, power concentration and institutional capture. Interacting causes: failed consequence capture, racism, injustice, propaganda, technology, and authoritarian coercion. The catastrophe was not merely a collection of cruel acts; it was an administrative and commercial system in which incentives, force, racial ideology, and weak accountability aligned around extraction.

Example 3 — World War I, 1914–1918: ancient coalitional psychology armed with industrial power

World War I emerged from imperial rivalry, alliance commitments, nationalism, militarism, insecurity, leadership choices, mobilization systems, and contingent escalation after the Sarajevo assassination. Millions of military personnel and civilians died, and the war destabilized societies far beyond the battlefield.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 3, mixed-motive psychology and evolutionary mismatch. Interacting causes: tribal identity, poor leadership, institutional rigidity, short-term miscalculation, ideology, and technology. Coalitional fear, honor, status, retaliation, and in-group loyalty—capacities with deep social roots—interacted with mass armies, rail timetables, industrial weapons, and alliance systems. Evolutionary language does not make the war inevitable; it helps explain why political and institutional systems were vulnerable to escalation dynamics that exceeded intuitive control.

Example 4 — The Atlantic slave trades and plantation systems: injustice reproduced through power and profit

For centuries, Atlantic slave-trading and plantation systems forcibly transported, exploited, and dehumanized millions of Africans and their descendants. Law, finance, shipping, insurance, racial ideology, state power, and consumer markets combined to make domination profitable and inheritable. The consequences extended beyond direct suffering to demographic disruption, political fragmentation, suppressed development, racial hierarchy, and persistent institutional legacies.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 4, systemic injustice. Interacting causes: capture, consequence transfer, identity-based exclusion, ideology, technology, and information control. Nathan Nunn’s empirical work links the intensity of historical slave trades to later African economic outcomes, while Nunn and Wantchekon identify a relationship with lower contemporary trust. These studies do not measure the entire legacy, but they demonstrate that organized injustice can alter institutions and social relations long after formal abolition.

Example 5 — China’s Great Famine, 1959–1961: leadership, incentives, and suppressed truth

The Great Leap Forward combined radical production campaigns, coercive procurement, false reporting, communal systems, policy rigidity, and punishment of dissent. Tens of millions of excess deaths are estimated, with exact totals debated. Environmental conditions contributed in some areas, but research strongly supports institutional and policy mechanisms as central to the scale of the famine.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 5, failure to select, constrain, and correct leadership. Interacting causes: authoritarianism, ideology, information corruption, denial, consequence transfer, and institutional rigidity. Local officials inflated production figures under political pressure; procurement could then remove food from communities whose reported surpluses were fictitious. Concentrated authority and fear converted policy error into mass mortality and made correction perilous.

Example 6 — The Rwandan genocide, 1994: identity, elite mobilization, and mass participation

In roughly one hundred days, extremist organizers and participants killed an estimated 800,000 people, primarily Tutsi as well as moderate Hutu; exact totals vary. Historical inequality, colonial racial classification, civil war, elite strategy, fear, local coercion, propaganda, and institutional organization all contributed.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 6, coalitionalism and identity-based conflict. Interacting causes: dehumanization, propaganda, authoritarian power, poor leadership, and impunity. David Yanagizawa-Drott’s analysis found that reception of hate radio increased participation in violence in the studied areas and also produced spillover effects through social interaction. Radio did not create the conflict by itself; it amplified and coordinated an already organized genocidal project.

Example 7 — The collapse of Newfoundland’s northern cod fishery, 1992: a commons destroyed despite warnings

Industrial fishing, excessive quotas, technological expansion, ecological uncertainty, political pressure, and weak incorporation of fishers’ and scientists’ warnings contributed to the collapse of northern cod and a moratorium that devastated communities. Debate continues over the relative importance of fishing, environmental change, predation, and recovery dynamics.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 7, failure to protect a commons. Interacting causes: short-term incentives, information filtering, institutional rigidity, technology, and ecological overshoot. Hutchings and Myers argued that scientific uncertainty was often interpreted in ways that supported continued exploitation. The case shows how actors can depend on a resource while the competitive and political system rewards its depletion.

Example 8 — Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union: political doctrine displacing scientific reasoning

Trofim Lysenko’s politically favored agricultural doctrines rejected established genetics and gained state backing under Stalin. Geneticists were dismissed, imprisoned, or worse; research and education were distorted for decades. The direct contribution of Lysenkoism to particular famine totals is disputed and should not be exaggerated, but its damage to biological science, agricultural inquiry, and truthful correction is well documented.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 8, institutional protection and use of rational and scientific problem-solving. Interacting causes: ideology, leadership, authoritarianism, information corruption, and institutional rigidity. This case does not demonstrate a general absence of universal education; it more directly demonstrates what happens when authority determines scientific truth and punishes professionals for disconfirming evidence. It therefore also strongly illustrates Causes 9, 14, 15, and 16.

Example 9 — Chernobyl, 1986: secrecy, design defects, and a broken information system

Reactor design characteristics, unsafe testing, inadequate safety culture, operating violations, secrecy, and failures in communication contributed to the Chernobyl disaster. The initial response included delay and restricted information, increasing public exposure and distrust. Long-term health effects remain complex to estimate beyond well-established thyroid-cancer increases among those exposed as children or adolescents.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 9, information corruption. Interacting causes: authoritarianism, technology, leadership, complexity, and institutional defensiveness. The International Atomic Energy Agency’s INSAG-7 reassessment shifted emphasis beyond operator error toward design and regulatory failures. Chernobyl shows how a system that suppresses bad news can make technical risk more dangerous at every stage—from design to operation to emergency response.

Example 10 — Challenger and Columbia, 1986 and 2003: denial, normalization, and repeated organizational failure

The Challenger shuttle broke apart after O-ring failure in cold conditions; Columbia was lost after foam damaged its wing during launch. Official investigations identified physical causes and organizational conditions, including schedule pressure, communication barriers, normalized anomalies, weak safety authority, and failure to treat previous warning signs as evidence requiring fundamental correction.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 10, denial and refusal to learn. Interacting causes: leadership, information filtering, path dependence, complexity, and short-term pressure. The Columbia Accident Investigation Board explicitly connected the accident to NASA’s history and culture and treated organizational causes as seriously as the physical failure. The recurrence is central: an organization can study one disaster yet preserve deeper routines that produce another.

Example 11 — The U.S. Dust Bowl, 1930s: immediate incentives, environmental stress, and delayed consequences

Severe drought interacted with extensive cultivation, soil exposure, economic pressure, and farming practices to produce massive dust storms, crop failure, displacement, and health damage across the Great Plains. Climate variability was essential, but modeling research finds that land degradation amplified the drought and its effects.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 11, short-termism and bias. Interacting causes: overshoot, market incentives, information limits, inequality, and scale mismatch. Individual cultivation decisions made sense within prevailing land, credit, and market arrangements, while their cumulative regional effect reduced ecological resilience. The catastrophe reveals how delayed and distributed consequences can remain politically weak until a threshold is crossed.

Example 12 — The 1918 influenza pandemic: a fast-moving threat crossing fragmented jurisdictions

The 1918 influenza pandemic killed tens of millions worldwide, although estimates vary. Wartime troop movement, censorship, limited medical knowledge, crowded conditions, and uneven public-health authority shaped transmission and response. Cities differed in the timing and duration of nonpharmaceutical interventions.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 12, failure to organize cooperation at the appropriate scale. Interacting causes: information control, leadership, short-term war priorities, inequality, and global connectivity. Historical comparisons reported by Markel and colleagues found associations between earlier, layered, and longer interventions and lower mortality in U.S. cities. The broader lesson is not that one centralized authority would have eliminated the pandemic, but that pathogens move across boundaries faster than fragmented systems readily coordinate.

Example 13 — The Aral Sea disaster: centrally planned ecological overshoot

Soviet diversion of the rivers feeding the Aral Sea for irrigated agriculture caused the sea to shrink dramatically. Fisheries collapsed, salinity rose, exposed sediments contributed to dust and health problems, and regional livelihoods were transformed. Some portions have partially recovered through later engineering, while much of the system remains profoundly altered.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 13, ecological and resource overshoot. Interacting causes: power concentration, short-term production goals, information control, scale mismatch, technology, and injustice. Philip Micklin describes the Aral as one of the world’s major human-made environmental disasters. The case shows that command systems and markets can both externalize ecological costs when production rewards are separated from basin-wide consequences.

Example 14 — The Holocaust: racial ideology joined to bureaucracy and technology

Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically persecuted and murdered six million Jews and millions of other victims. The Holocaust developed through antisemitism, racial ideology, authoritarian power, war, bureaucracy, expropriation, propaganda, professional participation, local collaboration, and industrial and transportation systems.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 14, rigid ideology and non-falsifiable governance. Interacting causes: coalitional exclusion, dehumanization, leadership, capture, information control, authoritarianism, and technology. Ideology defined entire populations as biological enemies and interpreted evidence through that premise. The catastrophe demonstrates that education and administrative sophistication do not by themselves prevent barbarism when expertise is subordinated to an identity-based exterminatory project.

Example 15 — The French monarchy before 1789: path dependence, fiscal lock-in, and failed adaptation

Before the French Revolution, war debt, unequal taxation, privileged estates, fragmented jurisdictions, political conflict, food stress, and institutional constraints made fiscal reform extraordinarily difficult. Efforts to change the system threatened groups whose rights and status were embedded in it, while the monarchy’s legitimacy and financial room narrowed.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 15, path dependence and failure to adapt. Interacting causes: injustice, leadership, capture, information, short-term finance, and ecological shocks. Historians debate the relative importance of class, culture, fiscal crisis, political contingency, and popular mobilization. The case nevertheless demonstrates how inherited privileges and institutional vetoes can narrow the available pathways until crisis transforms the regime amid enormous human cost; it cannot establish what earlier reforms would have prevented.

Example 16 — Democratic Kampuchea, 1975–1979: coercion consuming the society it claimed to remake

The Khmer Rouge emptied cities, imposed forced labor, abolished institutions, persecuted perceived enemies, and produced mass death through execution, starvation, disease, and overwork. Estimates commonly fall around 1.5 to 2 million deaths, with uncertainty.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 16, authoritarianism and the security-overhead trap. Interacting causes: rigid ideology, destructive leadership, information isolation, dehumanization, war, and institutional destruction. The regime treated evidence of failure as sabotage, generating new enemies and further coercion. Security logic expanded until the system attacked its own cadres and productive capacity.

Example 17 — The Western Roman Empire’s transformation and collapse: complexity under declining returns and repeated shocks

The end of the Western Roman imperial system in the fifth century involved political instability, military pressures, fiscal constraints, civil war, changing elite relations, migration, disease, climate variability, and dependence on complex administrative and military structures. No single-cause explanation commands consensus.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 17, complexity and diminishing returns. Interacting causes: leadership, capture, inequality, ecological and disease shocks, scale, and cascading failure. Tainter’s complexity thesis is influential but debated; more recent work adds climate and pandemic evidence. The value of the case is not proof of a universal collapse law. It shows how maintaining large, specialized systems becomes harder when revenue, legitimacy, security, population, and environmental stability deteriorate together.

Example 18 — The global financial crisis, 2007–2009: tightly coupled finance and contagious failure

Housing leverage, securitization, opaque derivatives, fragile short-term funding, ratings failures, weak regulation, institutional incentives, and interconnected balance sheets contributed to a crisis that spread rapidly through global finance and the real economy. Governments intervened to prevent wider collapse, while unemployment, foreclosure, fiscal strain, and inequality imposed broad social costs.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 18, tight coupling and lost resilience. Interacting causes: consequence transfer, capture, complexity, short-termism, information failure, and leadership. Haldane and May used ecological-network analogies to show how individually rational diversification and connectivity can increase systemic vulnerability. The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission documented failures across regulation, governance, risk management, and accountability, while dissenting commissioners disputed parts of its interpretation.

Example 19 — Nuclear destruction and near catastrophe: capability outrunning governance

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki caused mass death, injury, displacement, and long-term radiation effects. The subsequent arms race created arsenals capable of civilization-scale destruction and posing an uncertain but serious risk to humanity’s long-term survival. Documented accidents, false alarms, and crises—including the Cuban Missile Crisis—show that deterrence systems depend on technology, procedures, leaders, interpretation, and luck.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 19, technology advancing faster than governance and human development. Interacting causes: tribal conflict, secrecy, leadership, short-term pressure, information error, and neglect of low-probability, high-impact risks. Scholarship disputes the necessity and effects of the 1945 bombings and the stability of deterrence. The uncontested structural fact is that a small number of decisions and technical systems can now impose devastating global consequences far beyond those participating in them.

Example 20 — The Late Bronze Age collapse, around 1200 BCE: interacting stresses and cascading breakdown

Across parts of the eastern Mediterranean, palatial centers fell, trade networks contracted, writing systems disappeared in some regions, and political orders transformed. Proposed contributors include drought, crop failure, migration, conflict, rebellion, earthquakes, trade disruption, and the fragility of interdependent palace economies.

Principal mechanism emphasized in this example: Cause 20, systemic coupling and cascading failure. Interacting causes: climate stress, tight trade networks, complexity, war, leadership, and institutional rigidity. Recent tree-ring evidence identifies a severe multi-year drought coincident with the Hittite collapse, but drought alone does not explain the regional variation. The case is valuable precisely because it resists monocausal explanation: several stressed systems appear to have failed or transformed together.

7. Cross-Era and Alternative-Pathway Comparisons

The twenty detailed catastrophe examples are weighted toward the modern period because evidence is richer and mechanisms can be traced more directly. The phrase “10,000 years” would be overstated if those examples were the only support. This section adds a broad cross-era matrix, followed by cases in which serious pressures produced partial correction, successful coordination, adaptation, or a less catastrophic outcome.

Cross-era recurrence matrix

This matrix is illustrative rather than exhaustive. Evidence becomes less complete, less evenly distributed, and more dependent on archaeology as it moves backward in time. It does not claim that every region followed one developmental sequence.

Humanity Is Not Ecologically Condemned: The Keystone-Culture Corrective

Jem Bendell’s work on “keystone cultures” provides an important corrective to any account of long-term human dysfunction. Evidence from Indigenous and other long-enduring societies indicates that humans have not only damaged ecosystems. Under some conditions, communities have intentionally shaped forests, grasslands, wetlands, fire regimes, food systems, and other landscapes in ways that maintained or increased biodiversity, strengthened food security, and supported regenerative relationships across generations.

These cases weaken claims that Homo sapiens is biologically compelled to maximize consumption, exhaust every accessible resource, or follow a predetermined path from temporary abundance to overshoot and collapse. They also caution against treating nonindustrial societies as passive occupants of untouched wilderness. In many regions, landscapes that colonizers regarded as wild were partly the results of sophisticated and sustained human stewardship.

This evidence also challenges linear progress ideology. Human history is not a one-way ascent from simple foraging to agriculture, cities, industrial technology, and supposedly superior social organization. Societies have moved among different subsistence systems, governance arrangements, settlement patterns, and ecological relationships, sometimes abandoning or modifying practices that had become destructive.

Modern science, medicine, communications, rights movements, and public institutions have produced real advances. However, these achievements do not establish that every increase in technological control, extraction, consumption, economic growth, or organizational scale constitutes progress. Progress must be evaluated by its domain, distribution, ecological cost, resilience, reversibility, and effects on future generations rather than inferred automatically from novelty, complexity, wealth, or power.

Bendell further argues that the extraordinary ecological destructiveness of industrial consumer civilization is historically and institutionally produced rather than the unavoidable expression of a timeless human essence. Colonial expansion, commodification, concentrated economic power, and growth-dependent monetary and economic systems have all helped separate decision-makers and consumers from the social and ecological consequences of their actions.

These are significant causal mechanisms, but they should not be converted into a single master explanation. Their effects interact with mixed human motives, power concentration, intergroup competition, free-riding, information corruption, technological amplification, ecological limits, leadership, governance capacity, and historical contingency. Modern ecocide is therefore neither an inexplicable moral failure nor the product of one institution acting alone. It emerges from a reinforcing causal system.

This corrective must not be turned into the opposite romantic simplification. Indigenous, ancient, and nonindustrial societies were highly diverse. Some experienced warfare, domination, inequality, resource depletion, species loss, or other ecological damage, and the surviving evidence is incomplete and uneven.

Nor does the existence of regenerative cultures prove that cooperation and stewardship automatically survive population growth, external markets, military pressure, climate disruption, elite capture, or persistent free-riding. Long-enduring ecological relationships depend on learned knowledge, cultural meaning, legitimate rules, monitoring, restraint, intergenerational transmission, and institutions capable of protecting commons from both internal exploitation and external disruption.

The combined conclusion is neither misanthropic fatalism nor nostalgia. Humans possess the capacity to become destructive ecological amplifiers or beneficial ecological participants. Which role becomes dominant depends on culture, incentives, power, technology, governance, ecological conditions, and the ability to learn before damage becomes irreversible.

Ecological overshoot remains a hard physical constraint, but it is not a complete theory of human behavior or civilizational destiny. Humanity is not exempt from ecological limits, yet neither is it biologically condemned to violate them. The practical challenge is to build and preserve the social conditions under which restraint, regeneration, truthful feedback, consequence capture, and long-term cooperation can remain stable at the scales now required.

Alternative-pathway and near-miss cases which did not produce disasters, catastrophes or collapse

1. The Montreal Protocol and ozone-layer recovery

Scientific warning, public concern, industrial substitution, international negotiation, differentiated obligations, finance, monitoring, and repeated treaty adjustment produced a major reduction in ozone-depleting substances. The 2022 scientific assessment found recovery in progress while emphasizing regional differences, time delays, and remaining uncertainty (WMO/UNEP 2022). This is evidence that a global commons problem can produce coordinated correction when alternatives, institutions, measurement, and political agreement align. It does not prove that every global problem is equally tractable.

2. Global smallpox eradication

Smallpox eradication combined vaccination, surveillance, local adaptation, ring containment, international coordination, field workers, state capacity, and sustained verification. The World Health Assembly declared eradication in 1980 (World Health Organization). The case shows successful higher-order cooperation across political systems, but its favorable conditions—a human-only pathogen, recognizable symptoms, and an effective vaccine—limit generalization to other diseases.

3. Long-enduring common-pool-resource governance

Ostrom’s comparative cases demonstrated that communities sometimes avoid resource collapse through boundaries, locally legitimate rules, monitoring, graduated sanctions, conflict resolution, and nested organization (Ostrom 1990). This directly contradicts fatalistic readings of the “tragedy of the commons.” It also shows why institutional arrangements cannot be copied mechanically: scale, ecology, trust, external markets, and state recognition matter.

4. Kristianstad Vattenrike wetland governance in Sweden

Research traced a shift from fragmented and deteriorating wetland management toward adaptive co-management involving local knowledge, bridging leadership, networks, municipal authority, and cross-scale learning (Olsson, Folke, and Hahn 2004). The case makes transformation visible as a process rather than a slogan. It remains one regional case and should not be universalized.

5. Divergent U.S. city responses during the 1918 influenza pandemic

Cities faced a broadly shared pathogen but implemented nonpharmaceutical interventions at different times, in different combinations, and for different durations. Comparative studies found that earlier and more sustained interventions were associated with lower mortality in the cities studied (Markel et al. 2007; Hatchett, Mecher, and Lipsitch 2007). This is a near-miss comparison: similar pressure produced different trajectories because timing, information, authority, and public-health action differed.

6. Violent and nonviolent resistance to domination, 1900–2006

Erica Chenoweth and Maria J. Stephan compared major violent and primarily nonviolent campaigns seeking regime change, an end to occupation, or secession. Their analysis found that nonviolent campaigns in the studied period were more successful overall and could mobilize broader participation, encourage tactical innovation, disrupt cooperation with rulers, and increase the possibility of security-force defections. Corrected 2026 tables continue to support the book’s central argument and report an association between primarily nonviolent resistance and higher post-conflict democracy, while the 2026 erratum documents publication, notation, and replication corrections (Chenoweth and Stephan 2011, with 2026 corrections).

This comparison directly tests political transformation rather than technical coordination. It does not prove that nonviolent action always succeeds, that every campaign was just, or that strategy alone determines outcomes. Campaign selection, repression, participation, organization, international conditions, and historical context all matter. Its value here is to show that resistance to domination can follow systematically different pathways and that the means of change can influence both immediate success and later institutional outcomes.

These cases do not turn the diagnosis paper into a solutions program. They serve a narrower analytical purpose: they demonstrate multifinality. Similar systems and pressures do not always end in injustice or collapse, and the framework must explain both failure and correction.

8. Findings and Conclusion

The historical record does not show that civilization is only dysfunctional and unjust. It shows that human cooperation is powerful enough to create cities, science, rights movements, public health, law, art, education, and global coordination—and that the same organizational capacity can be captured, redirected, or destabilized.

Nine conclusions follow from the evidence reviewed:

  1. No single villain explains recurrence. Individuals matter, but destructive leaders arise within selection systems, incentives, identities, and institutions that enable them.
  2. Injustice is structural as well as moral. It determines who controls decisions, who receives benefits, who bears risks, whose evidence counts, and whether cooperation retains legitimacy.
  3. Knowledge does not automatically produce correction. Information can be filtered, denied, captured, misunderstood, or defeated by incentives and identity.
  4. Success can generate vulnerability. Surplus concentrates power; efficiency removes redundancy; problem-solving adds complexity; connectivity creates contagion routes; technology enlarges consequences.
  5. The present danger is interaction. Ancient human tendencies now operate through global systems whose ecological, technological, financial, informational, and political failures can cascade.
  6. Similar outcomes can arise through different paths. No one sequence explains every famine, war, dictatorship, or collapse.
  7. Similar pressures can produce different futures. Correction, adaptation, harm displacement, authoritarian consolidation, fragmentation, transformation, and several forms of collapse are possible; the branch depends on relationships, capacity, power, information, ecology, timing, and contingency.
  8. Collapse is distributive and scale-specific. The fall of a ruler, empire, tax system, state administration, economy, life-support system, or ecosystem affects different groups in different ways and should not be treated as a single outcome.
  9. Reform must preserve necessary functions while replacing injustice. Dismantling an exploitative institution without replacing its violence-control, coordination, service, or credible-commitment functions can produce state failure or a new predatory order.

Ten thousand years of recurring dysfunction and injustice persist not primarily because humanity has failed to discover good moral principles. Civilizations have articulated many admirable principles. Recurrence persists because societies have repeatedly failed to build and preserve evolvable, multi-scale, non-captured institutions that align incentives with common well-being, keep decision-makers connected to consequences, protect pro-social contributors, restrain free-riding and domination, select and constrain capable leaders, preserve truthful feedback, distribute rights and burdens fairly, remain within ecological limits, and adapt before crisis closes the available pathways.

This conclusion does not reduce history to institutions alone. Human psychology, culture, ecology, technology, chance, and individual agency matter. It states that moral aspiration becomes historically durable only when the surrounding causal system does not reward its violation and disable its correction.

The central diagnosis is therefore neither pessimistic fatalism nor automatic progress. Human societies possess genuine capacities for cooperation, reflection, institutional learning, and moral expansion.

They also repeatedly construct systems that reward extraction, obscure consequences, concentrate power, suppress correction, and transfer harm. Which tendency prevails is historically contingent. Humanity faces critical survival-scale choices. Will humanity keep repeating the causes of the cycles of dysfunction and injustice over the last 10,000 years, or will it learn from those lessons and choose new paths to create a far more functional and just world?

This paper ends at diagnosis by design. It does not claim that naming the causes supplies a program for overcoming them. The standards, institutions, sequencing, safeguards, costs, political constraints, and implementation pathways required to address these causes belong in a separate solutions white paper that we will release in the near future.

The conclusion above could be misunderstood unless one final distinction is made: recurrence is not inevitability. Similar pressures can reappear across historical eras, yet societies can produce different outcomes depending on their leadership, information, institutional design, cooperation, monitoring, timing, and capacity to learn and adapt.

Illustration 21 makes this distinction visible. Its upper half summarizes the recurring patterns that have operated across eras. Its lower half presents six cases in which societies redirected serious pressures toward partial correction, durable cooperation, or beneficial transformation. The illustration therefore serves as a bridge between this paper’s diagnosis and the forthcoming solutions paper: humanity is not guaranteed to escape the 10,000-year trap, but neither is it condemned to repeat it.

9. Research Approach, Evidence, and Limitations

This white paper is an interdisciplinary synthesis, not a new statistical study. It draws from evolutionary theory, archaeology, history, political science, economics, sociology, psychology, adult-development research, organizational learning, education, ecology, complexity science, disaster research, risk analysis, and technology governance.

Evidence is presented in three connected forms:

  1. Cause descriptions summarize mechanisms and cite representative research.
  2. Historical catastrophe examples show how multiple mechanisms combined in consequential real-world cases.
  3. The supporting bibliography provides an extensive cause-by-cause evidence base, including foundational works, empirical studies, major syntheses, official investigations, and authoritative assessments.

The numbering provides stable cross-references; it is not a scientific ranking, measured universal coefficient, or claim that the elements occupy equivalent causal levels. Their relative importance changes with the society, era, scale, and outcome being explained. Historical cases are not offered as controlled experiments, and the paper avoids claiming that any catastrophe had only one cause.

The framework also distinguishes evidence strength. Some mechanisms—such as cognitive bias, social identity, elite influence, commons dilemmas, path dependence, misinformation, ecological overshoot, and network contagion—have large research literatures. Others, such as applying adult-development stages to political selection or combining all 20 mechanisms into a single civilizational model, are integrative propositions supported indirectly by several fields rather than directly tested as a whole.

Measurement cautions are especially important. No national or global survey directly measures the complete package meant here by rational, scientific, systemic, and metacognitive competence. This paper therefore gives no national or global prevalence estimate. It uses the narrower, supportable statement that most people have never received systematic education in the complete set of cognitive, analytical, and problem-solving capacities described here.

Source-selection criteria

Our source-selection criteria: We do our best to select from the most credible sources knowledgeable in a specific area and, in some cases, newer, less-recognized sources offering original, legitimate evidence and thinking in the area.

In practice, preference was given to peer-reviewed research, systematic or major scholarly syntheses, primary historical evidence and datasets, official investigations, authoritative scientific assessments, and academic books from established presses. Sources were evaluated for relevance, methodological transparency, directness of support, disciplinary standing, currency, uncertainty, and corroboration. A source’s prestige did not exempt it from criticism, and a source’s novelty did not disqualify it when its evidence and reasoning were legitimate. Search and selection were purposive rather than exhaustive; this is one reason the paper is not described as a systematic review.

Research cutoff: July 30, 2026. Claims described as current were checked against sources available through that date.

Systems theory, DMAP, and Laske’s 28 thought forms

Among many other rational thinking, analysis, and problem-solving methodologies, the Universe Institute uses systems theory, dialectical metasystemic analysis, and its problem-solving DMAP methodology for research and analysis on this project. DMAP means Dialectical Metasystemic Analysis and Problem-Solving. It uses systems analysis, rational and evidentiary checks, red-team review, and questions adapted from Otto Laske’s dialectical DTF framework to examine processes, contexts, relationships, and transformations.

Terminology matters. In Laske’s DTF framework, the 28 elements are dialectical thought forms organized into four classes; the Universe Institute often reformulates them as “perspectives” or question prompts for practical DMAP analysis. This paper was reviewed using a qualitative checklist adapted from those 28 thought forms. It was a conceptual completeness audit of the paper, not a formally scored DTF cognitive assessment of an individual. Formal DTF assessment involves trained interpretation of an individual's speech or text, explicit scoring, and procedures not performed here. The methodological distinction is supported by Laske’s published description of DTF.

The audit did not treat the thought forms as twenty-eight independent boxes that could be “checked off” mechanically. It asked whether the causal framework presented in this white paper adequately represented motion and history; embedded parts within wholes and layers; constituted people and institutions through relationships; preserved contradiction and alternative values; traced thresholds, coordination, agency, and branching transformation; and examined the limits of its own framing. Section 4 reports the substantive additions produced by that review.

A complementary completeness check: Ken Wilber’s four quadrants

Ken Wilber’s four-quadrant framework distinguishes four major domains of reality: the interior of individuals—the realm of experience, intention, identity, values, and meaning; the observable exterior of individuals—the realm of bodies, behavior, performance, and action; the shared interior of collectives—the realm of culture, language, norms, ideology, and worldview; and the exterior organization of collectives—the realm of institutions, economies, technologies, infrastructures, political systems, and ecosystems.

Used as a secondary paper completeness check, Wilber’s framework confirms that this paper examines all four domains. It addresses individual psychology, cognitive development, motives, and judgment; observable behavior, leadership actions, violence, cooperation, and technology use; cultural meaning, identity, socialization, ideology, and shared reality; and institutional, political-economic, technological, and ecological systems. Many of the 20 interacting causes operate across several or all four quadrants. Authoritarianism, for example, may involve a leader’s psychology, observable coercive behavior, a culture that legitimizes domination, and institutional systems that concentrate and enforce power.

Wilber’s quadrants and Otto Laske’s dialectical thought-form classes are complementary but not interchangeable. Wilber primarily helps identify the domain or perspective from which a phenomenon is being examined. Laske’s framework asks how that phenomenon should be understood as a changing process, as something embedded within larger contexts, as a product of relationships, and as part of possible transformations. Each of Wilber’s four quadrants can therefore be investigated using all four Laske classes and their 28 thought forms. One of the reasons we created this white paper beyond its subject matter was to show other researchers how Laske’s 28 dialectical thought forms and the DMAP methodology can improve research.

In simplified terms, Wilber helps determine where to look, while Laske helps determine how to investigate what is found. Wilber’s framework strengthens the breadth of this paper’s coverage. The Laske/DMAP analysis adds greater depth concerning history, contradiction, feedback, emergence, thresholds, agency, development, and branching transformation. Covering all four Wilber quadrants does not prove that every relevant fact or causal mechanism has been identified. It does mean that no major individual or collective, nor any interior or exterior domain, was excluded by the paper’s analytical design.

Historical case selection and what the cases can establish

The historical cases were selected purposively to illustrate the operation of different mechanisms across several types of catastrophe. They were not randomly sampled, preregistered, or selected through a comprehensive database after blind coding. Most were chosen after the 20-part framework had been developed. The examples therefore demonstrate plausibility, recurrence, interaction, and explanatory usefulness; they do not independently prove that a listed mechanism was necessary, sufficient, or quantitatively dominant.

Selection favored cases with serious consequences, substantial documentation, relevance to one or more causal elements, and variation in period, region, political system, hazard, and outcome. Because written and quantitative evidence is much richer for modern states, the detailed sample remains disproportionately modern. Section 7 adds a cross-era matrix and comparison cases in which similar pressures produced correction, adaptation, or successful coordination. Those comparisons reduce—but cannot eliminate—confirmation and failure-selection bias.

Each case uses the label “Principal mechanism emphasized in this example”. This is an explanatory choice made by the paper, not a claim that historians agree it was the event’s single primary cause. Counterfactual statements are identified as uncertain, and disputed mortality estimates or interpretations are qualified.

Acknowledgments, intellectual contributions, and relationship to previous research

This paper does not claim to replace the specialized historical, archaeological, political, psychological, evolutionary, ecological, and complexity-science literatures on which it relies. Its distinctive contribution is integrative: it brings findings normally examined separately into a provisional six-layer framework of 20 interacting causal elements. In the credible comparative work reviewed for this edition, no single study was found that combines this complete set of human-developmental, informational, power, justice, institutional, ecological, technological, and systemic-risk dimensions in a single analysis of recurring civilizational dysfunctionality and injustice. That is a claim about the reviewed literature, not proof that no comparable work exists in any language or archive.

The closest broad syntheses shaped important corrections in this edition. Luke Kemp’s Goliath’s Curse sharpened the analysis of appropriable resources, concentrated force, constrained exit, elite power, and the unequal consequences of different collapses. Peter Turchin’s The Great Holocene Transformation, the Seshat Global History Databank, and the related comparative test of social-complexity hypotheses supplied the closest 10,000-year quantitative comparison and the contested proposition that intersocietal competition helped expand both cooperation and oppression.

Michael Mann’s four-volume Sources of Social Power clarified the relative autonomy of ideological, economic, military, and political power and the distinction between collective power through cooperation and distributive power over others. Francis Fukuyama’s Origins of Political Order and Political Order and Political Decay strengthened the distinction among state capacity, rule of law, political accountability, and impersonal administration.

The analysis of early hierarchy and collapse also owes important debts to Kent Flannery and Joyce Marcus on mechanisms that create hereditary inequality; David Graeber and David Wengrow on political experimentation and the rejection of automatic developmental ladders; James C. Scott on legibility, grain, taxation, constrained populations, and suppressed local knowledge; Patricia McAnany and Norman Yoffee on resilience and the aftermath of empire; Joseph Tainter on diminishing returns to complexity; Elinor Ostrom on successful commons governance; and Douglass North, John Wallis, and Barry Weingast on violence control and limited-access orders. Jack Goldstone, Peter Turchin, and Sergey Nefedov supplied the structural-demographic configuration connecting popular immiseration, elite overproduction, state fiscal strain, intra-elite conflict, and instability. Albert Hirschman’s exit, voice, and loyalty framework helped clarify why blocked exit and suppressed voice can preserve domination.

John Stewart’s work on consequence capture, suppression of destructive free-riding, protection of contributors, and higher-order cooperative organization remains foundational to the paper’s central synthesis. Stanley Salthe’s scale-sensitive thinking informed the analysis of upward and downward causation. Otto Laske’s dialectical thought-form framework, Roy Bhaskar’s critical realism and dialectic, Margaret Archer’s morphogenetic and agency analyses, and Michael Basseches’s work on dialectical thinking informed the DMAP audit. Erica Chenoweth and Maria J. Stephan’s research—used with its 2026 erratum and corrected tables—supports the direct comparison of violent and nonviolent justice-oriented transformation.

Future empirical validation

This framework is a conceptual map and research agenda, not a quantitatively validated universal theory. A stronger empirical program should:

  • translate each element into observable indicators while preserving uncertainty and historical context;
  • state predicted interactions, time delays, thresholds, and scope conditions before examining outcomes;
  • compare this framework with simpler and competing explanations rather than testing it only against null models;
  • use preregistered or independently selected cases that include catastrophes, resilient societies, stable but unjust orders, reforms, and failed reforms;
  • record missing evidence, expert disagreement, alternative coding, and confidence ranges, following strengths demonstrated by Seshat’s documented review process;
  • test whether the framework predicts or explains outcomes better than narrower models without simply absorbing every result after the fact; and
  • identify evidence that would weaken, revise, divide, or falsify each proposition.

Accountability: The obligation to explain decisions, accept review, and face appropriate consequences for conduct or failure.

Adaptive capacity: The ability of a person, organization, or society to adjust successfully when conditions change.

Administrative legibility: The degree to which governments or other powerful institutions can identify, classify, measure, monitor, tax, regulate, or control a population, its land, and its productive activities. In James C. Scott’s work, making complex societies administratively “legible” often increases a government’s ability to govern and provide services, but it can also increase its capacity for taxation, conscription, coercion, and extraction.

Algorithm: A set of instructions a computer follows to process information or make decisions. Online algorithms often determine what information users see.

Authoritarianism: A system or style of rule that concentrates power and sharply limits political competition, civil liberties, dissent, or accountability.

Bias: A systematic tendency that can distort judgment, evidence evaluation, or treatment of people. Bias may be conscious or unconscious.

Billionaire-scale power: The capacity created when extreme private wealth can be converted into political, economic, informational, cultural, legal, or technological influence. The term describes a structural condition and does not assume that every billionaire behaves identically.

Boundary condition: A limit or surrounding condition that constrains what a system can do, even if it is not the direct cause of every event inside the system.

Capture / institutional capture: A condition in which powerful groups gain control over institutions or rules that are supposed to serve a wider public purpose.

Cascade: A sequence in which failure or change in one part of a system triggers failures or changes in other parts.

Causal mechanism: The process through which one condition helps produce another.

Civilization-level dysfunctionality: Recurring, substantially preventable failure to organize society in ways that protect long-term common well-being, fairness, truth, sustainability, and adaptation.

Coalitionalism: The tendency to organize into groups that coordinate internally and may compete with, exclude, or attack other groups.

Cognitive bias: A recurring pattern of mental error, such as seeking confirming evidence or giving too much weight to vivid recent events.

Cognitive dissonance: Discomfort caused by conflict among beliefs, actions, or self-image. People may reduce it by changing beliefs, denying facts, or justifying conduct.

Collapse: A major loss or transformation of a specified system. The term must identify what collapses—such as a regime, state capacity, infrastructure, essential social systems, an ecosystem, or global civilization—and who is affected.

Collective-action problem: A situation in which people would benefit from cooperation but individual incentives, mistrust, or coordination barriers make cooperation difficult.

Common-pool resource: A resource that is difficult to exclude people from using and that one person’s use can deplete, such as a fishery, forest, or aquifer.

Complex adaptive system: A system with many interacting parts that learn or change, producing outcomes that cannot always be predicted from the parts alone.

Complexity: The number and variety of parts, connections, rules, or levels in a system.

Consequence capture: The degree to which decision-makers experience a fair share of the benefits and harms produced by their decisions.

Constructive-developmental theory: A theory, associated especially with Robert Kegan, that examines how the structure through which adults make meaning can develop.

Corrective feedback: Information showing whether actions are producing intended results and allowing decisions to be revised.

Corrective justice: Fair acknowledgment, repair, compensation, or remedy after wrongdoing or harm.

Credible commitment: A promise or agreement that other actors have good reason to believe will be honored because incentives, rules, enforcement, or reputation make violation difficult or costly.

Critical transition: A large and sometimes rapid shift in a system after pressures move it beyond a threshold.

Dehumanization: Thinking or speaking about people as if they are less than human or outside normal moral concern.

Denial: Refusal or inability to acknowledge threatening facts, responsibility, or harm.

Dialectical thinking: Thinking that examines change, contradiction, relationships, context, and the way apparently opposing truths may interact.

Diminishing returns: A pattern in which each additional investment produces a smaller added benefit than earlier investments.

Disinformation: False or misleading information deliberately created or spread to deceive.

Distributive injustice: Unfair distribution of wealth, opportunity, protection, benefits, risks, or burdens.

DMAP: Dialectical Metasystemic Analysis and Problem-Solving, the Universe Institute’s practical methodology combining rational, systems, dialectical, red-team, and problem-solving analysis.

DTF: Otto Laske’s Dialectical Thought Form framework. It organizes 28 thought forms into Process, Context, Relationship, and Transformation classes.

Externality: A cost or benefit imposed on people who did not choose the activity producing it and are not fully included in the transaction.

Falsifiable: Capable, at least in principle, of being shown wrong by evidence.

Feedback loop: A circular process in which an effect returns to influence its cause. It may amplify change or stabilize a system.

Free-rider: A person or organization that receives the benefits of cooperation while avoiding a fair share of the costs.

Frontier AI model: An artificial-intelligence model near the leading edge of current general-purpose capability. The exact boundary changes as the technology develops.

Globalization penalty: The added vulnerability created when global integration spreads shocks quickly or eliminates local and regional backup capacity.

Governance: The rules, institutions, practices, and relationships through which groups make and carry out collective decisions.

Hysteresis: A condition in which a system retains the effects of its history. After pressure changes or damages the system, simply removing or reducing that pressure may not restore the earlier condition. Recovery may still be possible, but it may require stronger or different intervention, active repair, or considerable time.

Identity fusion: A strong merging of personal identity with group identity that can make threats to the group feel personally existential.

Immiseration: Worsening material conditions and insecurity for a population, such as declining real wages, health, housing, food access, or economic opportunity.

Incentive alignment: An arrangement in which rewards and penalties encourage conduct that supports the intended purpose of the larger system.

In-group / out-group: A group a person identifies with and people considered outside that group.

Institutional reproduction: The process through which organizations and societies carry rules, roles, norms, power relationships, and everyday practices forward by teaching and socializing each new generation or new group of members.

Intergenerational injustice: Unfair transfer of debt, depletion, pollution, climate damage, or risk to future generations.

Irreversibility: A loss or change that cannot be undone, or cannot be reversed within the human, historical, or ecological period being considered. Species extinction is literally irreversible; some climate, ecological, cultural, and nuclear harms are effectively irreversible because their effects can last for centuries or generations.

Legitimacy: Broad acceptance that an institution or authority has a justified right to govern and does so through acceptable procedures.

Limited-access order: A political-economic arrangement in which powerful groups restrict access to organizations and privileges, partly using rents and bargains to contain violence among elites.

Metacognition: Awareness and evaluation of one’s own thinking, assumptions, strategies, and errors.

Metasystemic thinking: Thinking that examines how several systems interact, conflict, develop, or combine into larger systems.

Misinformation: False or misleading information, whether or not the person spreading it intends to deceive.

Moral hazard: A situation in which protection from consequences encourages someone to take greater risks.

Motivated reasoning: The tendency for desired conclusions or identity needs to influence how people search for and evaluate evidence.

Multifinality: The principle that similar starting conditions can lead to different outcomes.

Non-falsifiable governance: Governance based on claims that are protected from evidence because every possible outcome is interpreted as confirming the doctrine.

Nonlinear change: Change in which effects are not proportional to causes; small pressures may sometimes produce very large shifts.

Normalcy bias: The tendency to assume that because a disaster has not happened before, normal conditions will continue.

Organizational defensive routine: A practice that protects an organization from embarrassment or threat while preventing it from learning.

Path dependence: The way earlier choices create investments, rules, and expectations that make later change more difficult.

Planetary boundary: A scientifically proposed risk boundary for major Earth-system processes within which human societies have developed.

Systemic injustice: Injustice produced and repeated by institutions, rules, culture, markets, or other large social arrangements—not only by isolated prejudice.

Tail risk: A low-probability or hard-to-estimate event with extremely large consequences, often called long-tail risk.

Threshold: A point beyond which a system changes state or behaves differently.

Tight coupling: A condition in which connected processes have little slack and failures spread rapidly.

Tipping point: A critical threshold at which a relatively small additional pressure or change causes a system to shift disproportionately—and sometimes rapidly—from one condition into a substantially different condition. Before the tipping point, an ecological, climatic, political, economic, technological, or social system may absorb disturbances and continue operating in roughly the same way. As pressures accumulate, however, the system can lose resilience until one further change triggers a major reorganization.

After a tipping point is crossed, reinforcing feedback loops may accelerate or sustain the transition even if the original pressure is reduced. Possible effects include sudden instability, loss of essential functions, institutional or ecological collapse, rapid changes in behavior or social norms, and cascading failures in other connected systems. The resulting condition may exhibit hysteresis, meaning that removing the original pressure will not automatically restore the previous state. In more severe cases, the change may be irreversible or effectively irreversible on meaningful human or ecological timescales.

A tipping point does not necessarily produce an immediate catastrophe, and scientists may not know its exact location in advance. Some consequences unfold gradually after the threshold has been crossed, creating a dangerous delay between cause and visible effect. Tipping points can also be beneficial: new norms, technologies, cooperative institutions, or social movements can reach a threshold after which positive change spreads and becomes self-reinforcing. The central concern is that beyond a tipping point, change may acquire its own momentum, making prevention much easier and less costly than attempting restoration afterward.

Transformation: A change that alters the basic structure, relationships, purposes, or functioning of a system rather than making only small adjustments within it.

1. Are humans naturally bad?

No. Humans possess evolved capacities for cooperation, empathy, fairness, teaching, care, exploitation, aggression, status competition, and group conflict. Which tendencies are rewarded or restrained depends heavily on culture, development, incentives, leadership, and institutions.

2. If civilization is so dysfunctional, how did humanity make so much progress?

The same cooperative capacity that enables dysfunction also enables science, medicine, law, trade, rights movements, and public institutions. Progress and dysfunction can occur together. A society may improve health while increasing ecological risk, or expand legal equality while allowing economic capture.

3. Why use “10,000 years” when states are younger than that?

It is a rounded description of the era beginning with agriculture, sedentary communities, stored surplus, and expanding hierarchy. Fully developed states emerged later, at different times, and in different regions. The paper states this limitation explicitly.

4. Are the 20 elements ranked scientifically?

No. The numbers are reference labels only. The elements occupy different causal levels and change importance across eras, societies, and outcomes. No universal dataset assigns a precise coefficient to each one.

5. Why is injustice both one cause and part of many other causes?

Injustice is a distinct system of unequal rights, power, benefits, burdens, recognition, and accountability. It is also a cross-cutting result and amplifier of capture, coalitional exclusion, free-riding, poor leadership, ecological harm, and authoritarianism.

6. Is inequality always unjust?

No. Some differences may reflect choice, contribution, responsibility, need, or legitimate social purposes. They become unjust when produced by exclusion, coercion, inherited domination, biased procedures, avoidable deprivation, or the transfer of harms to people with less power.

7. Does this paper blame religion?

No. Religion can support compassion, restraint, meaning, education, and resistance to injustice. The identified danger is the use of sacred or secular ideology to place governing claims beyond evidence, equal rights, criticism, and revision.

8. Does the paper argue that intelligent people should rule?

No. Cognitive capacity is relevant to complex work, but intelligence alone does not provide integrity, maturity, wisdom, or service to common well-being. The paper argues that leadership fitness is multidimensional and that every leader must remain constrained and accountable.

14. Does complexity inevitably cause collapse?

No. Complexity solves problems and supports advanced civilization. Risk rises when complexity becomes costly, opaque, rigid, tightly coupled, and difficult to maintain or simplify under declining resources and legitimacy.

15. Is globalization good or bad?

Both benefits and risks are real. Globalization can spread knowledge, trade, and cooperation while also transmitting shocks and eliminating redundancy. The cause identified is fragile, tightly coupled dependency—not human connection itself.

16. Is a global polycrisis definitely happening?

Scholars debate the term and how to measure it. The stronger claim supported here is that major global systems are interconnected through common stresses, domino effects, tipping points, and feedbacks, so separate-risk analysis can miss important combined consequences.

17. Does history always repeat?

No. Specific events do not repeat exactly, and institutions can learn. Recurring mechanisms produce recognizable patterns under different conditions. The point of the framework is structural recurrence, not a claim that history follows a fixed cycle.

18. Why does this white paper contain no solutions?

The causal diagnosis is already large and requires careful evidence. Combining it with institutional designs, priorities, implementation, costs, safeguards, and political strategy would make both tasks less clear. A separate companion paper will address those questions and will be released soon.

19. Was this paper formally scored as a Laske DTF assessment?

No. The paper received a qualitative completeness review using questions adapted from Laske’s 28 thought forms through the Universe Institute’s DMAP method. Formal DTF assessment of a person’s thinking uses trained interpretation, scoring, and procedures that were not performed here.

20. Did artificial intelligence write this paper?

AI assisted with discovery, synthesis, drafting, citation checking, red-team review, copyediting, and HTML formatting. Humans established the original framework, research directions, definitions, DMAP analysis, ongoing questions, corrections, and final editorial decisions. 21. Do the successful comparison cases disprove the framework?

No. They improve it. They show that similar pressures can lead to different outcomes. A serious causal framework must explain correction, adaptation, and cooperation as well as catastrophe.

No. Systems affect incentives, information, and available choices, but people still differ in knowledge, power, coercion, intent, and responsibility. Structural explanation should improve the assignment of responsibility, not erase it.

23. Is “common well-being” politically neutral?

No important standard of justice is completely value-free. This paper defines common well-being through basic rights, fair procedures, protection from preventable harm, truthful governance, ecological viability, and long-term social capacity. Readers may dispute those priorities, which is why they are stated openly.

24. Why should readers trust such a broad interdisciplinary synthesis?

They should not trust it merely because it is broad or confidently written. They should examine the definitions, trace claims to their sources, compare alternative explanations, note the stated limits of the evidence, and submit specific corrections. Breadth is useful only when it remains transparent and corrigible.

25. Does “collapse” always mean that ordinary life or an entire society disappeared?

No. A dynasty, ruling coalition, tax system, imperial center, state administration, infrastructure network, ecosystem, or essential social-support system can fail without all other levels failing in the same way. Some political collapses reduce extraction for parts of a population; collapses of food, health, safety, ecological support, or tightly connected global systems can be catastrophic. Always ask: collapse of what, for whom, at what scale, and over what time?

26. What is elite overproduction, and does it predict revolution automatically?

Elite overproduction means that elite aspirants grow faster than the number of powerful positions available to them. It can intensify status competition, factional conflict, and counter-elite mobilization, especially when popular living conditions and state finances are also worsening. It is a historically testable pressure—not an automatic countdown or universal cycle.

27. Why did the revision not add a twenty-first causal element?

The comparative review found important missing mechanisms and distinctions, but no missing causal domain large enough to require a new top-level element. Structural-demographic instability, constrained exit, administrative legibility, credible commitment, and collapse types connect and refine existing elements. Adding them inside the existing architecture is more accurate than creating another overlapping label.

10. Anticipated Paper Criticisms and Relevant Commentary

This section is included to increase transparency, invite substantive review, and reduce the temptation to defend the paper as though criticism itself were evidence of hostility. Some criticism will be mistaken, superficial, automated, partisan, or influenced by threatened interests. Some will identify real errors. Motive does not determine validity. Every criticism should be judged by the clarity of its claim, the quality of its evidence, the accuracy of its reading, and whether it offers a better explanation.

Criticism 1: “This paper is too broad to be reliable.”

Relevant commentary: This is a legitimate risk. No author can possess equal expertise in archaeology, history, psychology, ecology, political economy, education, adult development, technology governance, and complexity science. The paper’s purpose is integrative diagnosis, not disciplinary replacement. It reduces the risk through explicit limits, traceable sources, evidence-confidence ratings, cross-disciplinary corroboration, and an invitation for specialists to identify specific errors. Breadth remains both its principal value and its principal vulnerability.

Criticism 2: “This is not a systematic review, and the sources were selected to confirm the framework.”

Relevant commentary: Correct: it is not a systematic review. Search strings, databases, inclusion counts, duplicate screening, and formal risk-of-bias protocols were not used consistently across every field. Sources were purposively selected. The paper therefore makes no claim of exhaustive coverage. Counter-cases, evidence-confidence labels, alternative interpretations, and transparent selection criteria reduce confirmation bias but do not eliminate it.

Criticism 3: “The twenty categories still overlap and mix causal levels.”

Relevant commentary: They do overlap, because real mechanisms operate across levels. The original flat “root causes” framing was too strong and has been corrected. The layered architecture now distinguishes predispositions, knowledge conditions, power and incentive mechanisms, institutional configurations, boundary conditions, and emergent amplifiers. Overlap is acceptable when the mechanism and causal level are stated; hidden duplication is not.

Criticism 4: “The framework is not quantitatively validated and gives no effect sizes.”

Relevant commentary: Correct. No dataset measures all 20 elements across ten millennia, and the paper does not assign universal coefficients. Individual mechanisms have empirical support of different kinds, while their integration is a conceptual proposition. The numbers are reference labels, not ranks. Future work could test narrower propositions with historical databases, comparative case coding, network analysis, process tracing, and prospective indicators.

Criticism 5: “The catastrophe cases were selected after the theory and therefore do not test it.”

Relevant commentary: Largely correct. The detailed cases illustrate and probe the framework; they are not a blind out-of-sample test. A stronger future test would define case-selection rules in advance and include cases chosen independently of the 20 labels.

Criticism 6: “The phrase ‘10,000 years’ overstates the evidence.”

Relevant commentary: The phrase is a rounded civilizational shorthand beginning with agriculture, sedentism, stored surplus, and expanding institutional complexity—not a claim that mature states existed everywhere in 8000 BCE. Evidence is much stronger for literate states and recent periods. The cross-era matrix broadens support, but early evidence remains uneven and should be described with greater caution than modern evidence.

Criticism 7: “The framework is Western, state-centered, and insufficiently attentive to marginalized knowledge.”

Relevant commentary: This criticism has merit. The source base is disproportionately English-language and academic, and surviving records favor states, empires, elites, warfare, and literate institutions. The current version explicitly adds feminist, intersectional, postcolonial, labor, disability, relational, and Indigenous-knowledge concerns, but it cannot claim full representation. Readers should identify missing regional scholarship, oral history, local knowledge, and non-Western theoretical traditions.

Criticism 8: “The definition of injustice and common well-being embeds contested political values.”

Relevant commentary: Yes. Rights, fair procedures, recognition, ecological viability, prevention of avoidable harm, and intergenerational responsibility are normative commitments. The paper does not present them as value-free scientific discoveries. It states them openly so that critics can challenge the standards rather than arguing against an invisible moral premise.

Criticism 9: “Evolutionary mismatch is an untestable just-so story.”

Relevant commentary: Evolutionary claims are especially vulnerable to speculative storytelling. This paper limits the claim to documented human capacities, cultural evolution, and plausible mismatches between small-group intuition and delayed global technological systems. It rejects biological determinism and does not treat evolutionary mismatch as the unique explanation for World War I or any catastrophe. Specific historical attributions remain more tentative than the general evidence for mixed motives and cognitive limitations.

Criticism 10: “Kegan, Laske, and DMAP are being used beyond their validated scope.”

Relevant commentary: This is a serious warning. Kegan’s developmental orders are not a validated universal gate for political leadership. Formal DTF assessment involves procedures not used here. This paper uses Kegan as a limited interpretive lens, and Laske’s thought forms through a qualitative DMAP completeness audit. It does not report a cognitive score or claim experimental validation of DMAP as a whole.

Criticism 11: “Systems language hides perpetrators and dilutes responsibility.”

Relevant commentary: Systems explanation can become moral fog if it treats all participants as equally caused and equally responsible. This paper rejects that move. Power, knowledge, intent, coercion, benefit, ability to exit, and control over consequences differ. Naming institutions and relationships should help assign responsibility more accurately while also explaining why replacing one perpetrator may not remove the mechanism.

Criticism 12: “The paper underestimates contingency, luck, and external shocks.”

Relevant commentary: This edition now distinguishes endogenous vulnerabilities from exogenous or partly exogenous hazards and includes timing and contingency in the branching model. Drought, pathogens, earthquakes, and unexpected decisions can initiate change. The framework’s stronger claim is that institutions influence whether a shock is absorbed, amplified, concealed, or unjustly distributed.

Criticism 13: “The paper explains failure more fully than success.”

Relevant commentary: Correct, partly by design: the subject is recurrent dysfunction and injustice. Yet failure-only selection would distort causal inference. The revision adds the Montreal Protocol, smallpox eradication, durable commons, wetland governance, and divergent 1918 city outcomes. More paired comparisons remain desirable.

Criticism 14: “The present polycrisis argument is alarmist.”

Relevant commentary: The term “polycrisis” is debated, and its measurement is developing. The paper does not claim that global collapse is certain. It makes the narrower, supported claim that climate, food, finance, health, conflict, information, migration, technology, and legitimacy are linked through common stresses, domino effects, tipping points, and feedbacks. Risks should be assessed in combination without converting uncertainty into certainty.

Criticism 15: “AI assistance makes the paper unreliable or inauthentic.”

Relevant commentary: AI assistance creates real risks of fabricated citations, shallow synthesis, omitted context, and confident error. Concealing its use would be less responsible than disclosing it. AI served as a research and drafting aid, not as evidence or accountable author. The human author and publisher retain responsibility for verification, argument, values, and correction. Independent expert review of the paper remains important.

Criticism 16: “The absence of solutions makes the diagnosis incomplete or politically inert.”

Relevant commentary: Diagnosis and implementation are related, but combining both at full length would obscure evidence, priorities, safeguards, costs, and political feasibility. This paper intentionally stops before advocacy. The upcoming companion paper must still show how proposed actions follow from the diagnosis and must test for unintended consequences, capture, feasibility, and scale mismatch.

Criticism 17: “Some attacks on the ideas in this white paper will be produced by bots or interests threatened by the paper.”

Relevant commentary: That is possible. Automated amplification, public-relations campaigns, selective quotation, personal attacks, and funding-linked advocacy are established features of modern information systems. But the paper should never use that possibility to dismiss criticism without examination. A critic with a vested interest can still be factually correct; a friendly reviewer can still be wrong. The appropriate response is to preserve the original claim, request the critic’s evidence and alternative explanation, disclose relevant conflicts where documented, correct real errors publicly, and distinguish substantive criticism from repetition, impersonation, harassment, or unsupported assertion.

Criticism 18: “The paper still uses ‘collapse’ as though it were one uniform catastrophe.”

Relevant commentary: The paper distinguishes collapse of a regime, state capacity, complexity or infrastructure, socioeconomic reproduction, ecosystems, and global civilization. It also asks who benefits or suffers and at what scale and time horizon. The categories can overlap, but they should not be treated as synonyms.

Criticism 19: “The paper repeats a deterministic claim that warfare created cooperation.”

Relevant commentary: It does not adopt that claim as settled fact. It presents cultural-multilevel-selection research as a contested mechanism through which intersocietal competition may have selected larger-scale coordination while simultaneously increasing oppression and out-group violence. War is not described as necessary, desirable, or sufficient.
